Sevinç Davut, a physiotherapist at Özel Ümit Medical Center, informed about the Schroth method used in scoliosis treatment.
Davut stated that scoliosis is a spinal deformity resulting from the lateral curvature of the spine and its rotation around its axis. The SCHROTH method, proven effective worldwide, is used in the treatment of scoliosis.
“The Schroth method is one of the world-renowned effective methods used in scoliosis treatment. Schroth is a method we model with correct positioning and breathing exercises planned according to the individual’s curvature condition and degree,” she said.
Why the Schroth method?
Sevinç Davut also clarified the question of why the Schroth method instead of classical exercises, stating, “The curvature in scoliosis is three-dimensional, and therefore, the correction must also be planned with three-dimensional exercises. Classical exercises are two-dimensional, so their effectiveness in scoliosis treatment is quite low.”
Providing information on what is done in the Schroth method, Physiotherapist Sevinç Davut said, “Correct positioning and breathing techniques are planned as specific exercises for each person’s spine, depending on the type and degree of curvature.
To determine whether a person has scoliosis; the individual’s shoulder and hip inequalities are examined, looking at whether one shoulder blade is inward while the other is outward, and whether one of our lumbar curves is more inward while the other is more even, thereby understanding whether scoliosis is present.”
Those trained in Schroth should be preferred
Indicating that treatment should be planned with a physiotherapist who has received Schroth training, Physiotherapist Davut continued her words:
“In children, the aim is to reduce, stop, or correct this curvature with necessary exercises before they complete their growth age. In adults, the goal is to achieve proper posture, manage pain, and increase functionality. Instead of doing scoliosis exercises seen on social media, it is more functional to use exercise methods specific to the individual’s curvature condition. Therefore, scoliosis treatment should be determined by specialist physicians and should be continued under the guidance of physiotherapists.”
