In Izmir, the General Directorate of İZSU, which signed a historic investment to completely renew the drinking water infrastructure of the world-famous tourism center Çeşme, has reached a 70% completion level in the final phase of the three-stage project. With the completion of the 3rd Stage Drinking Water Line works, which will service 10 neighborhoods and spans 320 kilometers, the drinking water issue in Çeşme will be resolved fundamentally.
The İzmir Metropolitan Municipality is continuing the construction of the drinking water investment that will solve the water shortage in Çeşme, which has a population exceeding 1 million in the summer months, in the neighborhoods of Çiftlik, Dalyan, and Altınkum. In the 3rd stage works, which will be realized with an investment of approximately 550 million Turkish Lira, İZSU teams have completed 220 kilometers of the 320-kilometer long drinking water transmission and distribution line. By renewing all transmission lines that had aged and caused leaks, İZSU General Directorate will have made a historic investment amounting to 1 billion Turkish Lira upon completing the project, which will provide healthy and uninterrupted drinking water to Çeşme across the three phases. When the manufacturing is completed, the drinking water needs of the district will be met uninterruptedly and healthily. Additionally, the issue of water loss will be minimized across the district, significantly contributing to the resolution of water shortages caused by the climate crisis.
30-year-old pipes are being replaced
Onur Yıldırım, the controller of the Çeşme 3rd Stage Drinking Water project, stated that they resumed the 3rd stage works with the end of the summer season, saying, “We are replacing the old drinking water pipes that have completed their economic life in Çeşme with high-quality pipes. We were faced with pipes over 30 years old. The pipes we are currently manufacturing guarantee Çeşme for 50 years. Our 6 teams are continuing their work unabated in different neighborhoods. We have completed 220 kilometers of the total 320 kilometers of manufacturing that will take place in 10 neighborhoods. Thanks to this project, which is planned in 3 stages and whose first two stages were completed in previous years, the rate of leakage will be minimized, thus preventing the water shortage experienced in Çeşme due to the drought caused by the climate crisis,” he said.
Historic investment for Çeşme
The İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, which took over the service responsibility of Çeşme district with the law numbered 6360 in 2014, initiated a historic investment due to the complete depletion of the economic life of the district’s drinking water network and the continuous interruptions caused by breakdowns. Under the 1st Stage drinking water line project, they renewed 200 kilometers of drinking water line in the neighborhoods of Germiyan, Ildır, Reisdere, Şifne, and Yalı, and completed the construction of the 320-kilometer drinking water network with the 2nd Stage drinking water line project. The neighborhoods of Alaçatı, Ardıç, Altınyunus, Boyalık, Celal Bayar, Çakabey, Fahrettinpaşa, and Ilıca have reached uninterrupted water supply. Upon completion of the 320-kilometer 3rd Stage Drinking Water Line Project, the neighborhoods of Altınkum, Cumhuriyet, Çiftlik, Dalyan, İsmet İnönü, Musalla, Ovacık, Sakarya, Şehit Mehmet, Üniversite, and 16 Eylül will gain new drinking water infrastructure.
