Exemplary Program Against Disasters from Ümraniye Municipality

The Ümraniye Municipality is showcasing exemplary success in disaster management by prioritizing public safety with a comprehensive preparedness program against potential disasters.

Ümraniye Municipality is on standby 24/7 against disasters with a team of 65 experts and a fully equipped vehicle fleet. By 2024, a total of 111,872 people in the district have received disaster awareness training. Ümraniye Municipality aims to strengthen its capacity to respond to disasters and increase social resilience.

Instant intervention with advanced information systems

The Mobile Disaster Information System (ABIS) makes vital information accessible on a smart map quickly after a disaster. Important locations such as gathering areas, temporary shelter zones, critical roads, and field hospitals are monitored through this system. Additionally, the periodic maintenance of 775 fire extinguishing devices in buildings owned by our municipality in the district is conducted, and they are continuously monitored with a numbering system.

Drills and preparedness activities

Ümraniye Municipality prepares for all scenarios by conducting drills every month with the search and rescue team based on different scenarios. Fire intervention and evacuation drills are also routinely carried out in municipal buildings. Disaster awareness training and emergency drills are regularly provided based on the requests of public institutions and the private sector.

Strong participation with volunteer training

AFAD volunteers who apply through e-Government complete the online training they receive and then prepare to take an active role in the field with a 5-day support training. The Ümraniye AFAD Center is in strong preparation against potential disaster scenarios in coordination with 23 Disaster Working Groups.

National support and recognition

Ümraniye Municipality contributes significantly to Turkey’s disaster response system by providing support not only in its own district but also in earthquakes, floods, and forest fires occurring across the country. These efforts were crowned with the State Medal of Superior Sacrifice and Decoration awarded by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to the Ümraniye Municipality Civil Defense Search and Rescue Team.
