In Aydın’s Kuşadası district, an injured stork identified to have arrived from Bulgaria via the ring on its leg was released back into the wild after treatment.
A citizen reported the injured stork to the Ecosystem Protection and Nature Lovers Association (EKODOSD) in the Ladies’ Beach neighborhood of Kuşadası. EKODOSD officials took the stork, which had an injury on its wing, for treatment. After its treatment, the stork was released back into nature.
EKODOSD President Bahattin Sürücü stated, “In our examinations, we noticed that there was also a ring on the stork’s leg. From the codes on the ring Bulgaria Ban Sofia 7 09673, we understood that it had entered our country from Bulgaria. It is likely that it either could not adapt to the migrating storks or was injured and released back into nature from Bulgaria after treatment. We think it followed the coastal route alone all the way to Kuşadası. We provided the necessary treatment and feeding for the stork, which appeared weak and tired. We reported the coded numbers on the ring to the Aydın Nature Conservation and National Parks Branch Directorate. This situation demonstrates the tangible benefits of ringing birds. If it hadn’t been for the ring, we wouldn’t have known that this stork came from Bulgaria. In previous years, a stork we ringed in Gölbent village of Söke, in collaboration with Ege University and DKMP, was reported to DKMP General Directorate when it died from an electric shock in a village near Athens, Greece. Authorities in Bulgaria will also be informed about this stork. The stork, which completed its treatment and recovered, was released back into nature together with experts from Aydın DKMP Branch Directorate.”
