Sivas has set record after record in grain production. A productive period in the agricultural sector has come to an end as the season concludes.
In Sivas, after months of intensive work, farmers have started to clear their fields to store and market their products. This year, the harvest of products such as grains, sugar beets, potatoes, and sunflowers has been carried out throughout Sivas. With approximately 2 million 470 thousand decares of grain cultivation, around 850 thousand tons of wheat has been harvested in Sivas. About 850 thousand tons of sugar beets have been produced on approximately 162 thousand decares, making Sivas a supplier of raw materials for 5 sugar factories. Notably, Sivas is recognized for its potato production, with 600 thousand tons of table potatoes produced as the season comes to an end. The president of the Sivas Agricultural Chamber, Hacı Çetindağ, stated, “We will continue to engage in all kinds of agriculture and farming to contribute to the national economy alongside all our farmers in Sivas.”
“Sivas is currently one of the sought-after provinces.”
Despite the drought caused by seasonal changes negatively affecting the farmers this year, Çetindağ noted that productivity has increased rather than decreased despite all the difficulties. He stated, “In our 2024 harvest, almost all of our products, except for sugar beets and potatoes, have been harvested. Currently, both seed and table potato harvests are ongoing. Additionally, sugar beet harvesting is also continuing. When you evaluate the year 2024 compared to previous years, despite the challenges posed by climate change and drought, the quality of this year’s wheat and the good yield have led to an increase in productivity compared to last year. Thus, the harvest continues. There are approximately 2 million 470 thousand decares of grain cultivation. Around 850 thousand tons of wheat has been produced, which is almost the same as last year. Of course, what do we attribute this to? Primarily to climate change and the opening of irrigation; our sugar beet, sunflower, potato, and wheat yields have perhaps remained at the same level, but our quality has improved. In addition, Sivas is currently one of the most sought-after provinces for both seed and table potatoes. Currently, those over 20 thousand decares are the first in Turkey, producing about 140 thousand tons of potato seeds,” he said.
“Both our infrastructure and our farmers are ready.”
Emphasizing that planting will continue despite the challenging conditions, Çetindağ stated, “In 2025, the planted potato seeds will hopefully come from our Sivas. Additionally, 600 thousand tons of table potatoes have been produced. Producing around 600 thousand tons of potatoes means a significant contribution to the economy in Turkey. I would like to thank the farmers of Sivas for this. Despite such difficult conditions, we will continue to plant. Furthermore, we have our sugar beets as you know. One of the characteristics of sugar beets is that, due to the cold and temperature differences, Sivas is the province with the highest sugar yield. Today, we produce the raw materials for 5 sugar factories from Sivas lands. Approximately 850 thousand tons of sugar beets are produced on around 162 thousand decares. We can surpass a million, one and a half million more, but due to the effects of drought, irrigation issues occurred, and this has slightly decreased. If it rains in the coming years and our reservoirs and ponds are filled, we will continue to improve these yields. Despite all difficulties, there is a great harvest in wheat, potatoes, sugar beets, and other forage crops. Today, we are among the top ten in agriculture among the 81 provinces. Looking at it, we are harvesting almost every product. Our goal here is to guide our youth towards farming. If our government balances the inputs in a way that farmers can utilize better, we will continue to engage in all kinds of agriculture and farming alongside all our farmers in Sivas to contribute to the national economy. Both our infrastructure and our farmers are ready. Our only problem is the instability of inputs.”
