A two-colored apple growing in an apple orchard in Karaman surprises onlookers.
In Kızık village, connected to the center of Karaman, the two-colored apple grown in the orchard of apple producer Ahmet Baş astonishes those who see it. The apple stands out not only for its appearance but also for the different tastes in each of its two halves.
“Apple growing is a family tradition for us.”
Providing information about the two-colored apple, orchard owner Ahmet Baş stated, “I have been producing apples for 13 years in Karaman, one of the places where the world’s highest quality apples are produced. In fact, apple farming is a profession passed down from my grandfather, as my grandfather also had an apple orchard. So we have been involved with apples since childhood. We first identified our two-colored apple last year. During the apple season, our number of workers is quite high. Our workers saw this two-colored apple on a few trees, and especially the younger workers ate some and took some with them. I was left with just the photos. This year, I heard that this apple is back on the same trees. I checked, and indeed, the same two-colored apples are there. Again, our worker friends took a couple each, but they kindly left one for me. This is definitely not something done with paper or adhesive tape. This has occurred as a result of the trees mutating in some way, leading to the emergence of such a two-colored apple. There is absolutely no human intervention involved here. Since it was the same last year, we are planning to thoroughly investigate this year and consider multiplying our fruit through laboratory methods and natural grafting, as well as applying for a patent. Because in other countries, when there is such a fruit or a different fruit, people immediately take its patent, give it a name, a brand, and present it to the global market. I want to do the necessary work related to this apple, to multiply it, both for the sake of the Turkish economy and to further develop our own capital. I think it’s a nice product,” he said.
“It has both two colors and two different tastes.”
Stating that the apple has two different tastes, Baş said, “One more very different feature of our apple is that one side is red and the other side is yellow. The taste is also different. The taste on the red side is a bit sweeter, while the taste on the yellow side is somewhat different, slightly tangy. This apple has both two colors and a noticeable taste difference on each side. This is something very special and it has become very interesting for us.”
“People are surprised when they see it on social media.”
Ahmet Baş noted that those who see the two-colored apple are surprised, saying, “Our staff working in the orchard shared this apple on many social media platforms even before I did. Of course, I shared it too. Everyone was very surprised, asking how such an apple could exist. At the same time, I consulted a few large enterprises and even a professor who conducts studies related to apples and is also an apple producer. We all agreed on the need to evaluate this kind of apple and increase its production. I think it’s a very nice thing. Of course, this is a natural gift from God; we definitely did not intervene in it. I sincerely wish to see it multiplied naturally, and I am hopeful that we will succeed. We will multiply the sapling of this apple and produce it. As I said, I believe we can contribute to the national economy.”
