Medical Oncology Specialist Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Mertsoylu stated that breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women, saying, “It ranks second among cancer-related deaths. However, the rate of complete recovery in breast cancer is quite high with early diagnosis.”
Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Mertsoylu from Medical Park Adana Hospital emphasized that in the United States and many European countries, more than 65% of breast cancer cases are detected at Stage 1 or Stage 2, while only 5% are diagnosed at Stage 4 (metastatic). He stated, “Early diagnosis is vital for successfully treating breast cancer and enabling patients to lead a healthy life. In Turkey, however, 20% of cases are still detected at the metastatic stage. It is crucial to emphasize the importance of regular screening tests to prevent this delay.”
“Mammography is recommended every two years starting from age 40”
Prof. Dr. Mertsoylu mentioned that according to the breast cancer screening program implemented by the Ministry of Health throughout Turkey, all women are recommended to have a mammogram every two years starting at age 40. He noted, “It is particularly important for women with a family history of breast cancer or those who carry genetic risks such as BRCA1 or BRCA2 to start screening at an earlier age. For women in this high-risk group, it is suggested to use additional imaging methods such as breast MRI along with mammography for close monitoring. This not only helps in early detection of the disease but also significantly increases survival and quality of life.”
“There are promising developments for metastatic breast cancer”
Mertsoylu pointed out that with the introduction of Trastuzumab (an antibody used to treat breast cancer and gastric cancer) in 1998, there has been a significant increase in life expectancy and quality of life, especially in patients with HER2-positive breast cancer. He remarked, “Since then, many new targeted therapies have been developed, and even in metastatic disease, life expectancy and quality of life have markedly improved. Thanks to these treatments, many women living with metastatic breast cancer can lead active lives for many years.”
“Remember, screening saves lives”
Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Mertsoylu concluded, “Do not neglect to perform self-examinations for early diagnosis of breast cancer and participate in the regular screening programs offered by the Ministry of Health. Especially women with a family history or genetic predisposition should take these important steps to protect their health. Early diagnosis in breast cancer is life-saving. Contribute to women’s healthy living by informing them during this awareness month.”
