As part of cultural events, calligrapher Mahmut Şahin held a conference on “Calligraphy Art and Mosque Decoration” at the Diyanet Academy Kocaeli Religious Higher Education Center. Dr. Emin Kara, Deputy Director of the Diyanet Academy Kocaeli Religious Higher Education Center, made statements regarding the mission and vision of the religious higher education centers that provide education under the Diyanet Academy. Calligrapher Mahmut Şahin provided important information about the art of calligraphy and its history. He emphasized the historical evolution of the art of beautiful writing from the early years of Islam to the late Ottoman period and the ongoing tradition of education and teaching today. Şahin touched upon the meanings expressed by paper, pen, and ink and explained various writing styles practiced in the past and present, such as thuluth, naskh, and talik. He stated that the Quran was revealed in the Hejaz region, recited in Egypt, and written in Istanbul, declaring Istanbul as the capital of writing. Şahin made references to the intricacies concerning calligrapher sultans and the works they produced, and presented examples of various writings from famous calligraphers related to the tradition of hilye writing in Islamic civilization.
