Ara Güler was commemorated in Beyoğlu on the 6th anniversary of his passing.
Master photojournalist Ara Güler was commemorated on the 6th anniversary of his passing in Beyoğlu, where he spent his life. Speaking at the memorial event, Beyoğlu Mayor İnan Güney stated, “For us, Ara Güler is someone we say, ‘thank goodness he lived, thank goodness he passed through Beyoğlu.'”

One of Turkey’s greatest photojournalists, who spent his life in Beyoğlu, Ara Güler was remembered in Beyoğlu on the 6th anniversary of his death. The commemoration event, organized in cooperation with the FOTON Association and the Beyoğlu Municipality, took place at the Atlas Cinema. The opening speeches of the event, which was attended by famous personalities, were delivered by Beyoğlu Mayor İnan Güney and Ara Güler’s spiritual son Fatih Aslan. The night also featured the screening of the documentary prepared by Erdal Buldun about Ara Güler, during which Okan Bayülgen and Coşkun Aral discussed Ara Güler and the legacy he left behind.
“Ara Güler is a value we say ‘thankfully he passed through Beyoğlu'”
Noting that Ara Güler is an important value for Beyoğlu, Beyoğlu Mayor İnan Güney stated, “For some people, we cannot say they are dead; our tongue cannot bear it. We say thankfully he lived because of his works, what he produced, and his ideology. Therefore, Ara Güler was a value for us that we say ‘thankfully he lived, thankfully he passed through Beyoğlu.’ He became acquainted with photography at a young age in the photo studios of Beyoğlu. He defined himself as a photojournalist. He witnessed many historical events through his lens. Many famous figures, from Nazım Hikmet to Abidin Dino and Picasso, were reflected in his camera. He was our neighbor in Beyoğlu. It is our duty to keep the name Ara Güler alive in Beyoğlu more strongly.”

Fatih Aslan also stated, “All of Ara Güler’s photographs have a story. There is genuine sadness, joy, and happiness. The one who best reflects this sadness, this happiness, this joy, and this richness through his lens is Ara Güler, the eye of Istanbul. I express my respects from here and remember him with gratitude.”
