The 96th anniversary of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s arrival in Sinop was celebrated with ceremonies and events.
The ceremony held at the İskele Square began with a folk dance performance. Citizens and state officials gathered in the square to welcome the boat, symbolizing Atatürk’s arrival in Sinop, adorned with Turkish flags. Students carrying a photograph taken during Atatürk’s arrival in the city 96 years ago and the Turkish flag disembarked from the boat to salute the protocol. The Turkish flag was handed over to the Sinop Governor Mustafa Özarslan by the students who came down from the boat. Governor Özarslan, who received the Turkish flag by kissing it, thanked the students. Governor Özarslan, Sinop Mayor Metin Gürbüz, Chief Public Prosecutor Mesut Pektaş, and the accompanying delegation then proceeded to Cumhuriyet Square, passing along the route Atatürk took when he arrived in the city, accompanied by a parade. The protocol members greeted the citizens during the walk. The citizens cheered for those participating in the parade. After the Sinop Governorship, Sinop Municipality, and the Sinop Exchange and Balkan Peoples Culture Research and Solidarity Association laid wreaths at the Atatürk statue in front of the governorship, a moment of silence was observed, followed by the singing of the National Anthem. Later in the program, Governor Özarslan signed the honor book located in the building where Atatürk rested during his visit to Sinop, which is now used as the Courthouse.
After signing the honor book, a ceremony was also held in front of the Atatürk statue at Mehmet Akit Ersoy Middle School. Following poems read by middle school students Mehmet Uras Kaymakkavak and Nehir Karaköse, a reenactment of Atatürk’s speech introducing letters with a porter in front of a blackboard was performed. The ceremony concluded with music teachers performing songs loved by Atatürk.
