Meryem Özdemir, a 78-year-old woman who suffered a stroke due to a blood clot in her brain in Erzincan, has regained her life thanks to a successful surgery performed at Mengücek Gazi Training and Research Hospital.

Despite using blood thinners, 78-year-old Meryem Özdemir presented to Mengücek Gazi Training and Research Hospital with complaints of recurrent blood clots in her brain. She was treated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Muharrem Said Coşkun from the Cardiology Department, and she regained her health after undergoing a surgery to close the left atrial appendage.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Muharrem Said Coşkun stated that the patient had experienced two blood clots in her brain despite using strong blood thinners, saying, “Due to the inadequacy of blood thinners, we decided to perform surgery to close the pouch where the clot formed in the heart. We discharged our patient after closing the left atrial appendage.”

Prof. Dr. Eftal Murat Bakırcı emphasized that this procedure can only be performed in certain centers in Turkey, such as Istanbul and Izmir, and noted that aside from Ankara, it can only be performed in Erzincan in the region. Bakırcı stated, “We have a strong team. All procedures related to these types of structural heart diseases are successfully carried out in our hospital. Our patients do not need to go outside Erzincan.”

Yunus Emre Özdemir, the son of heart patient Meryem Özdemir, expressed that his mother has been paralyzed for three years, saying, “My mother was using blood thinners due to arrhythmia. Despite that, she had a blood clot in her brain. With the surgery performed by Prof. Said, we hope we will not experience this again. Thank God my mother had a successful surgery. Right now, thank God, we have no issues.”
