Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Specialist Dr. Müberra Hraloğlu issued important warnings about sepsis. Dr. Hraloğlu stated that sepsis is a sneaky and rapidly progressing disease, saying, “A seemingly healthy person can face a life-threatening situation in a short time.”

Every year on September 13, World Sepsis Day is recognized globally. Millions of people fall victim to this insidious and rapidly progressing condition each year, and unfortunately, many lose their lives without being aware of this danger. Dr. Müberra Hraloğlu, an Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Specialist at Biruni University Hospital, explained the things to know about the disease and the precautions to be taken.

“The greatest danger of sepsis is its rapid deterioration.”

In her statement, Dr. Müberra Hraloğlu explained, “Sepsis is an excessive and uncontrolled immune response in the body caused by infections from bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites. This condition can lead to organ failures and can be fatal if untreated. The greatest danger of sepsis is its ability to worsen rapidly. A seemingly healthy person can face a life-threatening situation in a short time.”

“The elderly, infants, and those with chronic diseases are more vulnerable.”

Speaking about those at risk, Dr. Hraloğlu said, “Individuals with weakened immune systems, the elderly, infants, those with chronic illnesses, and patients receiving treatment in intensive care units are more vulnerable to sepsis. However, even healthy individuals can develop sepsis after a simple infection.”

“The symptoms of sepsis are often indistinguishable from other infections.”

Regarding the symptoms of the disease, Dr. Hraloğlu mentioned, “Although the symptoms of sepsis are often indistinguishable from other infections, a few key signs are important. High fever or low body temperature, rapid heart rate and breathing, confusion and fatigue, severe pain, and weakness are among these signs. These symptoms can deteriorate rapidly, so emergency intervention is essential.”

“Treatment is generally done with antibiotics and fluid support in intensive care.”

Discussing the treatment and prevention methods for sepsis, Dr. Hraloğlu stated, “If sepsis is not diagnosed and treated in a timely manner, it can be fatal. Treatment is usually conducted with antibiotics and fluid support in intensive care. Therefore, early diagnosis and intervention can be lifesaving. However, most importantly, preventing sepsis is crucial. Paying attention to simple hygiene rules, keeping vaccinations up to date, and taking infection symptoms seriously are the main ways to prevent sepsis.”

“Increasing awareness is one of the most effective ways to combat the disease.”

Finally, Dr. Hraloğlu emphasized the importance of sepsis awareness, stating: “The aim of World Sepsis Day is to ensure that people are more aware of this disease and to highlight the importance of training for healthcare workers on this topic. Increasing awareness about sepsis is one of the most effective ways to combat the disease. On this special day, while we remember patients fighting sepsis, healthcare workers, and those we’ve lost, we must take steps to raise awareness and educate others. Because sepsis is not just an infection; it is a vital threat.”
