The Mudanya Municipality Building was damaged in the 5.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred in 2023. As the demolition of the municipality building, which has been closed for about a year, begins, the design of the new municipality building will be determined through a competition. With the completion of the competition, it is planned to start construction and put the new municipality building into service in 2026.

The Mudanya Municipality Building started operating in 1976. After 24 years of service, strengthening works were initiated in the building, which was damaged in the 1999 Gölcük earthquake. By the time we reached 2023, the building, which had served as the municipality building for 47 years, was shaken again by a second earthquake. The building, which was damaged in the 5.1 magnitude earthquake, has been closed for about a year. Following recent inspections, the demolition of the building was deemed appropriate.

Barriers were erected around the building deemed suitable for demolition to avoid causing discomfort. The demolition of the five-story reinforced concrete building, which has a total area of 4,040 square meters, began from the area where the former Vakıflar Bank was located. The municipality building was evacuated weeks before the decision was made. The contractor company started the demolition of the building in exchange for scrap materials that would come out of it.

Competition for the design of the new municipality building

Mudanya Deputy Mayor Nisa Kartaltepe stated that the municipality building became unusable after the earthquake, saying, “After the December 4 earthquake, our municipality building became unusable. Therefore, we initiated our work within the framework of Law No. 6306. We conducted a risk structure assessment and completed all legislative processes. Then, we held the tender within July. As of August 16, we started the dismantling processes in the building. As of yesterday, we have quickly begun the demolition processes. My colleagues in the Urban Design Department have initiated a competition project. Our municipality building is located in a site area within the urban conservation project, so we are looking for projects that will present unique works in terms of architecture, urban planning, and all engineering fields that are compatible with the texture of this place and suitable for the city identity. After that, we want to select and implement the most appropriate project. We want it to be a building worthy of the people of Mudanya. We will start our work very soon. In 2026, we plan to realize the project and present the municipality building to the service of the people of Mudanya.”
