An 800-year-old lamp was found during the excavation works in Kalehisar, located in the Alaca district of Çorum.
Archaeological studies continue at the Kalehisar archaeological site, located in Mahmudiye village of Alaca district, which is one of the important cities of the Anatolian Seljuk period, under the leadership of Assoc. Prof. Mustafa Kemal Şahin from Aydın Adnan Menderes University. The lamp, which was found intact and used as a lighting device, consists of clay and has a glazed structure.
Kalehisar Excavation Director Assoc. Dr. Mustafa Kemal Şahin stated that they encountered a well-preserved example of a lamp during the excavations conducted in 2021, saying, “The lamp is used as a lighting device. It is made of clay and has a glazed interior. Similar examples have been found at Kudaabad Palace. Examples are exhibited at the Konya Karatay Madrasah. There are ones that are identical. This aspect is very important. A half lamp was found in the excavations around the castle in Ankara. The room there is similar to the lamp found here. Even a single example of a lamp found here has allowed us to understand many things.”
Assoc. Dr. Kemal Şahin also commented on the inscription from the 1st Alaaddin Keykubat period located in the Çorum Museum, stating, “The inscription gives us information about 1st Alaaddin Keykubat. During this period, he is one of the sultans with the best vision. If he had not been poisoned, perhaps there would not have been a Mongolian invasion. Maybe the Anatolian Seljuk State would have survived longer. But to understand the Anatolian Seljuks, it is essential to have a good knowledge of the period of 1st Alaaddin Keykubat. There is a significant development in construction during this period. The years 1218 to 1238 are very important. There is an artistic understanding formed under the influence of local traditions in Anatolia during the late 12th century and early 13th century, which we refer to as early period structures. However, after 1224, large structures were built with established rules. Considering this context, the period of 1st Alaaddin Keykubat is very important in every aspect. Therefore, more extensive findings are needed. I believe Kalehisar can provide this.”
