In the highlands of the Eastern Black Sea region, it is now rare to see large and small livestock grazing in herds as it used to be.
The highlands where thousands of large and small livestock used to graze in the Eastern Black Sea Region now present a picture that is far removed from those years.
In the Kerenkaş Plateau, which is part of the Kayacık neighborhood in the Araklı district of Trabzon, the number of large and small livestock that once contributed significantly to the economy has diminished greatly.
Aerial images taken from Kerenkaş Plateau and the surrounding highlands reveal the current state of livestock farming with just a few large and small animals, while citizens want the government to encourage livestock farming more.
Osman Akyıldız, a 64-year-old resident of Kerenkaş Plateau, stated that the number of cows, which used to be around 250 in the plateau, has now decreased to 20-30, saying, “I used to raise livestock, I grazed sheep and cows. There used to be 30 households here, and there were 200-250 cows. 30-40 years ago, there were over two thousand sheep, but now there are almost no sheep left; livestock farming has nearly zeroed out. In one plateau, there are only 20-30 sheep at most.”
“In the past, people came to the plateau to graze animals, but now they come for vacation.”
Akyıldız pointed out that in the past, people used to come to the highlands to graze animals, but now they come for vacation, stating, “The government needs to help by encouraging livestock farming. The government needs to provide cows as incentives. Right now, there are only about 30 animals in our plateau. In our own plateau, there are between 50-60. Therefore, the total number of large and small livestock, which was around 400, has now dropped to 60. That is, until 10 years ago, there were 3-4 times as many animals. I predict that in the coming years, this number will decrease even further. People generally go on vacation to places like Antalya, Cyprus, Marmaris, and Muğla, and the people of our Kayacık neighborhood come here for vacation. This place has now become a vacation plateau.”
