A 40-year-old woman who applied to the hospital wanting a child had 32 fibroids removed from her uterus. The operation, which was successful, allowed the woman to regain her health while preserving her uterus.
The 40-year-old female patient, who had a fibroid surgery about a year ago, consulted Dr. Hazel Çağın Kuzey, a specialist in Gynecology and Obstetrics at Biruni University Hospital, due to her desire to have a child. Upon ultrasound examination, multiple fibroids were detected in the woman’s uterus. Following the tests, the patient underwent surgery, during which exactly 32 fibroids were removed from her uterus. The woman regained her health without the need for a hysterectomy during the challenging surgery.
“We learned that she had fibroid surgery a year ago”
Providing information about the operation, Dr. Hazel Çağın Kuzey stated, “Our patient came to us wanting a child. We learned from her history that she had undergone fibroid surgery a year ago and multiple fibroids were removed. The ultrasound examination showed that there were multiple fibroids on the front and back walls of the uterus, the largest being 5-6 cm. In particular, 2-3 fibroids were very close to the inside of the uterus and were disrupting the uterine lining. Additionally, it was observed that the ovarian reserve had decreased somewhat.”
“It was a challenging surgery for us”
Dr. Kuzey described the surgery as quite challenging for the patient, stating, “Fibroids are masses with a lot of blood vessels, and the risk of bleeding significantly increases when there are many of them. The presence of multiple fibroids, three of which were inside the uterus, made it difficult, especially since those within the uterus were larger than could be removed using a hysteroscopic method.”
“If there were no desire for children, a hysterectomy would have been more appropriate”
Expressing that the patient’s uterus was preserved during the surgery, Dr. Kuzey mentioned, “If the patient had not wanted children, it would have been much more appropriate to remove the uterus instead of the fibroids. We preserved the uterus and the uterine lining in an orderly manner. We maintained the patient’s chance of becoming pregnant. From now on, the chance of pregnancy will depend on other factors. She had undergone the same surgery a year ago. Fibroids may recur. Therefore, to eliminate the risks of bleeding and recurrence, we generally recommend a hysterectomy for those over 40 years old.”
