The 1st Traditional Taha Akgül Karakucak Wrestling Championship has started at the Bağlum Stadium, organized by the Keçiören Municipality. The event will last for two days, on August 24-25, and on the first day, it was attended by Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mansur Yavaş, Keçiören Mayor Mesut Özarslan, national wrestler Taha Akgül, members of parliament, mayors, rectors, association presidents, and local residents.
“I came out of these meadows when I went to the Olympics”
Taha Akgül stated that a committee was present at the Karakucak Wrestling Championships to select shining athletes to include in the Keçiören Municipality’s infrastructure and said they would prepare the athletes they bring into the infrastructure for the Olympics. Akgül expressed that the Karakucak Wrestling is an investment in Turkish wrestling, saying, “The biggest award in the history of Turkey will be given at the Karakucak Wrestling Championships. Especially, a car will be given to the first place in the head wrestling category, and the size of the awards in other categories is significant. Currently, around 1,700 athletes will showcase their skills here. In this sense, I thank our Keçiören Municipality for their efforts for wrestling. This is the foundation of the mat. Oiled wrestling is very different; since Karakucak is oil-free, it is completely the same as mat wrestling. I came out of these meadows when I went to the Olympics. I came out of the festivals at the Karakucak Wrestling in Sivas.”
Mansur Yavaş: “We want new Ahmet Ayiklar, Mahmut Atalaylar, Taha Akgüller, and Rızalar to grow up”
Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mansur Yavaş pointed out that the desired result was not achieved in wrestling, the national sport, at the last Olympics, stating, “Wrestling is our national sport from which we will produce the champions whose names we will hear the most in all the competitions held in the world. Both traditional wrestling, karakucak, and oiled wrestling are all in our genes. With the leadership of our Keçiören Municipality and in cooperation with Ankara Metropolitan, we want to support our national sport and raise new Ahmet Ayiklar, Mahmut Atalaylar, Taha Akgüller, and Rızalar, and we want to raise the Turkish flag at every competition held in the world and sing our National Anthem in tears. The best way to achieve this is to support wrestling, and today we start with over 1,500 athletes coming from all over Turkey.”
