Dr. Mehmet Soyarslan, a faculty member at Medipol University Hospital, stated that biceps injuries and shoulder dislocations in overhead sports should be taken seriously. He noted that serious damage can occur in the shoulder area due to sudden arm movements, saying, “We surgically intervene in our patients who have no chance of recovery with physical therapy. The complete healing process after surgery can take between 3 to 6 months. It is advisable to consult a specialist doctor in cases of severe pain lasting more than 2-3 days.”

Biceps injuries are frequently observed in athletes engaged in overhead sports. Dr. Soyarslan, an Orthopedics and Traumatology specialist at Medipol Pendik University Hospital, emphasized that the process needs to be followed closely, stating that injuries often heal with physical therapy. However, he mentioned that surgical intervention is performed when physical therapy is insufficient.

Regarding the attachment of the biceps tendon, Dr. Soyarslan indicated that athletes in overhead sports such as volleyball, handball, and swimming often experience various injuries in the biceps area. He stated, “Especially, there can be many sport-specific injuries in the shoulder area. The most common injuries we see are inflammation of the biceps tendon in the arm area due to strain. We mostly restore our patients to a healthy state with physical therapy. There is a cartilage structure within the shoulder joint where the biceps tendon attaches. Sudden movements can cause damage here. In patients with persistent shoulder pain, if we detect a tear upon examination, repair may be possible through physical therapy.”

He also noted that in chronic strain, surgical methods may be considered. Dr. Soyarslan highlighted that chronic strain in athletes can lead to edema in certain tissues, stating, “We treat this with various injections. In stubborn cases, surgical treatment may also be necessary. We have rotator muscles that enable us to lift our shoulders. In more advanced cases, tears can occur in the muscles that allow us to lift our shoulders. We treat these tears surgically.”

Dr. Soyarslan pointed out that shoulder dislocations are also frequently seen in throwing sports such as volleyball and handball, saying, “In cases of recurrence, cartilage damage can occur. We treat these patients with surgery. After these surgeries, the patient may need to undergo physical therapy for a while. The complete healing process can take between 3 to 6 months.”

He remarked that shoulder pain can occur during sports in daily life and advised consulting a specialist doctor in cases of severe pain lasting more than 2-3 days.
