EC Boxing Board Chairman Erol Ceylan expressed his confidence that Turkey will reach better levels in boxing in the future.
EC Boxing Board Chairman Erol Ceylan made statements to İhlas News Agency (İHA) reporters. Speaking about the national boxers representing Turkey at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Erol Ceylan said, “It is attractive for us to see good boxers emerging from Turkey. Achieving two silver medals in women’s boxing at Paris 2024 would be a great success. Including women in the boxing category at the Olympics has worked in our favor. It would also be nice if we could achieve similar successes in men’s boxing, but the best in the world are competing against each other. It’s not easy.”
“I am confident that Turkey will reach a good position in boxing in the future”
Ceylan emphasized that the development of boxing in Turkey is being managed, stating, “If followers and scouts dig a little deeper and deserving individuals are invited to camps, there is great potential in Turkey. We already see this in women. This success actually exists in men as well. However, it is crucial to select the right people at the right times, give the deserving their due, and take them to the Olympics and the world and European championships accordingly. For me, Turkey is a sleeping giant. I am confident that Turkey will reach a good position in boxing in the future.”
Ceylan also commented on the removal of boxing from the Olympics, saying, “Of course, medals are valid, but we should not overlook the fact that Russia has been sidelined. A major competitor is absent from the Olympics. The Russians were a country that won medals at the Olympics. When they are included again, the competition will grow even more. The International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) decision to remove boxing from the Olympics did not change anything; boxing will continue.”
“I have been in professional boxing for 15 years”
Emphasizing that he has organized many boxing events both in Turkey and abroad for many years, Ceylan said, “I have been in professional boxing for 15 years. When I started 15 years ago, I entered boxing by training boxers from scratch. Those days are behind me now. It is more attractive for me to take professionals who are at a high level in the world rankings and continue with them. Because building the infrastructure is a laborious task, and I do not have the time. I am definitely continuing in professional boxing. I contribute to major matches and big nights.”
Erol Ceylan also pointed out that support for sports in Turkey is at a very good level, saying, “People can seek and find support. In my opinion, we need to continue valuing sports a little more. This way, Turkey can reach a better position.”
