President Günel: “We must use water resources efficiently.”

The Coastal Aegean Municipalities Union’s July Council Meeting, attended by Kuşadası Mayor Ömer Günel, was held in Selçuk district of İzmir. During the meeting, Mayor Ömer Günel emphasized the need for water conservation, especially in tourist cities, stating, “We will soon begin rainwater harvesting to increase our resources.”

The July Council Meeting of the Coastal Aegean Municipalities Union was chaired by Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ahmet Aras and took place in Selçuk. The meeting, hosted by Selçuk Mayor Filiz Ceritoğlu Sengel, was attended by Kuşadası Mayor Ömer Günel, Çeşme Mayor Lal Denizli, Narlıdere Mayor Erman Uzun, Ayvalık Mayor Mesut Ergin, Tire Mayor Hayati Okuroğlu, Dikili Mayor Adil Kırgöz, and Karaburun Mayor İlkay Girgin Erdoğan.

“A Self-Sufficient City”
In the meeting held at the Selçuk Efes City Memory Museum, Mayor Ömer Günel pointed out that there is a problem with the supply of drinking water due to the increased population during the summer period in tourist cities. Therefore, he stated that it is essential to utilize water resources efficiently. Mayor Ömer Günel said, “It is very important for us to turn to alternative sources in this regard. As Kuşadası Municipality, we will soon begin rainwater harvesting. Our aim is to make Kuşadası a self-sufficient city. We will also be the first coastal district municipality in Turkey to implement this project. This project is also vital for combating drought, preventing floods caused by rainwater entering the sewage system, and raising awareness about the conscious use of water resources.”

During the July Council meeting of the Coastal Aegean Municipalities Union, the mayors also discussed ways for the union members to support each other in the event of similar situations arising again, following the forest fires that occurred recently in Selçuk and Kuşadası. The meeting also addressed the impact of the ongoing economic crisis on municipalities and exchanged ideas on measures that could be taken to alleviate the situation.
