Following the decision to increase taxi fares after the UKOME meeting, the update of taxi meter tariffs for commercial taxis in Istanbul continues. Taxi drivers who are required to update their meters formed long queues in front of the service in Bağcılar.

After the meeting held by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) Transportation Coordination Center (UKOME), an increase was made in public transportation and taxi fares in Istanbul. According to the new tariff, the taxi fare for the shortest distance has become 100 TL, while the meter opening fee has risen to 30 TL. Due to the increase in taxi meter fares, taxi drivers who are required to update their meters formed long queues in front of the service in Bağcılar. Taxi drivers speaking to the camera expressed their dissatisfaction with the increase and stated that it should be reconsidered.

“It would have been better if they hadn’t done it at all”

Taxi driver Abdullah Türkeri, who expressed that the increase was minimal, said, “The increase is not worth it. I wish it hadn’t been done. We are waiting in line here. After this, I will go for maintenance. The oil maintenance has become 2,200 to 2,500 TL. The increase they made is a worthless increase. It would have been better if they hadn’t done it at all. I have been waiting for an hour and I can wait another hour. We will have new demands. This situation does not cover costs. We expect something from the mayor. They make every increase as they wish, but they do not consider taxi tradesmen.”

“A 13% increase is not sufficient”

Taxi driver Zafer Karakuş, who also expressed his dissatisfaction with the increase, said, “We are not satisfied with the increase. Car maintenance is very expensive. A 13% increase is not sufficient. I don’t know what will happen. I don’t know if our mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu will issue a new decision from UKOME. The lowest maintenance is 3,000 to 4,000 TL. This increase does not help us. I waited 4-5 hours for the update, but the settings are also expensive. This is a ridiculous increase. I would be glad if our mayor reconsiders the decision made at UKOME.”
