Sleep apnea syndrome, restless leg syndrome, bruxism, and other related conditions are diagnosed and treated at the Niğde Ömer Halisdemir Training and Research Hospital Sleep Center, where sleep-related issues that can lead to diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, and strokes are addressed.
Dr. Osman Koray Turhan, the Head Physician Assistant responsible for the Sleep Center, stated that patients suffering from complaints such as hypertension, obesity, and strokes receive treatment at the center and talked about the improvement in the quality of life for patients treated at the sleep center.
Turhan noted, “In the process characterized by sleep disorders and imbalances, when our patients come to us, we detect conditions such as apnea syndrome, restless leg movements, chronic movements, narcolepsy, and sleep terror using the equipment in our center. Our sleep unit consists of two rooms, and we carry out treatments with 4 healthcare staff and 1 physician. After administering our device-based treatment to patients, we receive feedback indicating significant changes in their quality of life.”
Dr. Taylan Yavuz Bulut, the Responsible Physician of the Sleep Center and a Neurology Specialist, emphasized that sleep apnea is a serious condition that lays the groundwork for many diseases and answered the question of who should apply to the center.
“Sleep disorders pave the way for other diseases.”
Dr. Taylan Yavuz Bulut pointed out that sleep apnea, which occurs in 2% of women and 4% of men, is a health issue that should be taken seriously, saying, “There are nearly as many patients suffering from sleep apnea as there are asthma and diabetes patients. The reason we consider sleep apnea to be a serious condition is that studies show it is one of the underlying causes of high blood pressure, arrhythmia, and stroke, but this is not widely known. If a person experiences snoring, nighttime breath cessation, daytime sleepiness, drowsiness while sitting or driving, waking up tired in the morning, and frequent nighttime urination, they should apply to our center.”
Bulut mentioned that there are three stages of sleep apnea and that snoring and sleep apnea are associated with many significant diseases. He stated that the treatment of patients who are hosted at the sleep center for one night is determined based on the results obtained, and some patients achieve positive results simply by losing weight and quitting smoking and alcohol.
Bulut highlighted that sleep apnea syndrome, which lays the groundwork for diseases such as hypertension and diabetes, is a risk factor for conditions such as heart attacks and strokes, emphasizing that sleep apnea syndrome is a condition that must be treated.
