Prof. Dr. Klaus Schmidt, who uncovered Göbeklitepe, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was remembered on the 10th anniversary of his passing. Hundreds of cycling enthusiasts gathered to visit the archaeologist’s home and pedaled to Göbeklitepe.

As part of the 5th memorial event held this year in Şanlıurfa, cycling enthusiasts came together at the house where German Archaeologist Prof. Dr. Klaus Schmidt lived and set off with the cycling event “We Pedal to Göbeklitepe Following Klaus Schmidt’s Footsteps.” A group of 100 cyclists started from the city center and pedaled approximately 20 kilometers to reach Göbeklitepe. The cycling enthusiasts had the opportunity to tour the Göbeklitepe archaeological site. Merve Ofluoğlu, Director of Culture and Tourism at the Metropolitan Municipality, who led the event, stated, “We plan to hold this event every year on a more comprehensive national and international level. Because Göbeklitepe is our face to the world, and we always remember Klaus Schmidt, who brought this to us, with mercy, and we will continue to mention his name.”

Aydın Aslan, the Provincial Director of Culture and Tourism of Şanlıurfa, emphasized Prof. Dr. Schmidt’s contributions to human history, especially regarding Göbeklitepe. The event, which reminded participants of the deep marks left by Prof. Dr. Klaus Schmidt in the scientific community and his influence in Şanlıurfa, received great appreciation from the attendees.
