Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) Olympic Swimming Pool has reopened after renovations and refurbishments.

Located in the İncesu area of the Atakum district, the OMU Olympic Swimming Pool was opened for service in 2001. Over time, some parts of the Olympic pool were damaged. The swimming pool, which started renovations in 2021, has reopened with a renewed appearance. The pool, which is 50 meters long, has 8 lanes and is 5 meters deep, also features a multipurpose diving pool and has a spectator capacity of 1,400. Due to its location by the sea, the swimming pool is among the few facilities in the country.

“A facility we wish all the people to use”

Speaking at the opening of the pool, OMU Rector Prof. Dr. Yavuz Ünal stated, “We want the university staff to use the facilities as much as possible, both on campus and in the event areas and other facilities within the university. Ondokuz Mayıs University is one of the universities in Turkey that hosts the most national athletes. It makes us proud that Samsun, the city of May 19, is known for sports and supports sports, as Ondokuz Mayıs University. We wish for the swimming pool and other facilities to be revitalized and used in a way that will not threaten health by increasing controls in the future. This facility is operated by the university and is a structure that we wish all our people to use. We specifically ask university staff: Please take time for yourselves. We are proud to serve the people of Samsun by making this Olympic swimming pool suitable for all conditions. The facilities at the university will provide opportunities not only for students at our university but also for any clubs or groups wishing to engage in activities in education, especially in preschool. I see our university as a guarantee not only in terms of operation but also in terms of health and organization. This is a structure within the university, but we wish all our people to use it. I thank the Ministry of Youth and Sports for the repairs of the facility.”

During the opening of the pool, swimming competitions were held in different age categories. The medals were presented to the competing athletes by Rector Ünal, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Murat Terzi, Deputy Provincial Director of National Education Celalettin Sula, and members of the protocol.
