This year, the master of contemporary literature, writer Murathan Mungan, has been honored with the Mersin City Literature Award, which has been organized for 17 years under the leadership of the Mersin Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MTSO). The award will be presented to Mungan at a ceremony to be held in November. The 17th edition of the Mersin City Literature Award, organized by MTSO to develop the interest in literature in Turkey and Mersin, and to transform it into a national productivity and draw the attention of literature readers to quality examples, took place this year. The evaluation committee of the Mersin City Literature Award, given in the name of the city through the efforts of MTSO to honor individuals who contribute to the development of Turkish literature and to ensure wider readership, consisting of Celal Soycan, Turhan Günay, Metin Cengiz, Yavuz Özdem, and Cemal Sakallı, deemed writer Murathan Mungan worthy of the award.
“Literature means a more beautiful world” MTSO Board Chairman Hakan Sefa Çakır stated that the Mersin City Literature Award, given continuously for 17 years, is the first and only award given in the name of a city in Turkey. Thanking Murathan Mungan for accepting this award and honoring Mersin, Çakır said, “Literature means a more beautiful world. We are proud to be a part of this cultural event, which has become institutionalized with our belief that literature, even in a general sense, is the most important thing that will contribute to the creation of a more livable, fair, peaceful, respectful, honest society, not only enriching our city and country economically.”
Mersin City Literature Award has been presented since 2007 Çakır emphasized that the Chamber will continue to support the ‘Mersin City Literature Award’ to continue in a qualified, impartial, non-political and non-ideological manner, with its focus on literature and Turkish language. He expressed that they will be happy to host Mungan in Mersin and introduce him to the people of Mersin at the award ceremony to be held in November. Thanking the past chamber managements and presidents, jury members, and everyone who has contributed to the Mersin City Literature Award for their support in ensuring its quality until today, Çakır said, “Literature may not change our world, but I am sure that when it changes us, our world will move in a more beautiful direction. Mersin Chamber of Commerce and Industry will continue to support culture and art for a more beautiful world and a more livable Mersin”.
