Psychologist Mehmet Güney Ziyalan stated that burnout, also known as exhaustion syndrome, is becoming an increasingly common mental health issue in today’s business world. Ziyalan emphasized that burnout syndrome can affect everyone regardless of their position and level of responsibility, and said, ‘the best way to deal with burnout is to prevent it.’ Acıbadem Kent Hospital Psychologist Mehmet Güney Ziyalan pointed out that one of the most important symptoms of burnout is ‘feeling constantly tired both physically and emotionally,’ and offered special recommendations to employees experiencing this emotional state.
Developing slowly
Ziyalan highlighted that burnout does not develop suddenly, but is caused by chronic stress and prolonged excessive workload. He stated that individuals experiencing burnout constantly feel tired both physically and emotionally, and mentioned common symptoms such as decreased interest in work, decreased productivity, difficulty concentrating, being skeptical or sarcastic towards colleagues, employers, or previously close coworkers, isolating oneself from family and friends, feeling misunderstood, along with physical symptoms like headaches, stomach and intestinal problems, and insomnia.
Try to implement these recommendations
Emphasizing that burnout is a destructive condition that makes it difficult for individuals to demonstrate and sustain their capacities, Psychologist Ziyalan said that the best way to combat burnout is to prevent it. His first recommendation is to ‘try to clearly separate your work life from your personal life,’ and he listed his warnings and recommendations as follows: ‘For example, try not to check your emails outside of work hours unless it’s necessary. If a work-related issue bothers you, write it down on your phone or planner, and postpone it by saying ‘I will think about it during work hours.’ If you have excessive workload, try to say no to new tasks, and even consider sharing the workload you already have. Especially if you are a manager, do not take on every task yourself. Try to improve your authority and reporting system. It may be difficult at first if you are a perfectionist, but you will get used to it as you see an increase in productivity. Have activities in your personal life that can help you unwind. If possible, make sure these activities do not harm your health. Remember the importance of exercise, balanced nutrition, and sufficient and regular sleep. If you feel exhausted, first talk to your manager; see what can be done. Some managers can be quite understanding and guiding. Even if the problem is not caused by you, a psychologist or psychiatrist can facilitate the solution. Improving your stress management skills will benefit you for a lifetime. Resting and taking a break for a while to relax and recover may sometimes be the only solution. Additionally, you can review your career goals and look for healthier working conditions. If you have close ones willing to listen, share your concerns with them. Do not shut yourself off saying ‘they won’t understand anyway.’
