Konya’s central Karatay Municipality signed the Global Covenant of Mayors (GCoM) a few weeks ago in line with sustainable city goals. The municipality has also started preparations for the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP) within the framework of this agreement. Karatay Mayor Hasan Kılca stated that they have signed an exemplary collaboration for a sustainable future.
Karatay Municipality took an important step towards a sustainable and eco-friendly city by signing the Global Covenant of Mayors (GCoM) in the past weeks. Following the signing of the Global Covenant of Mayors (GCoM), the municipality officially started preparations for the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP). The agreement aims to demonstrate a determined stance towards combating climate change in Karatay and achieving sustainable development goals.
Raising awareness for an environmentally friendly Karatay
The Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan agreement will greatly contribute to Karatay’s fight against climate change and play a significant role in creating an environmentally friendly district. Karatay Municipality aims to be a model on the international platform with the GCoM Agreement. Within the project, digital tools will be developed for the preparation and monitoring of local plans on climate change, ensuring their mutual adaptation, and transferring technical knowledge.
Meeting with the GCOM team
Fuat Özcan, the Director of Foreign Relations of Karatay Municipality, held an online meeting with the GCoM team; during the meeting, goals such as increasing energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions, and focusing on renewable energy projects were set within the framework of Karatay Municipality’s SECAP preparations.
We made an important signature for Karatay’s future
Mayor Hasan Kılca of Karatay emphasized in his statement regarding the matter that they have signed an exemplary cooperation for a sustainable future, stating that this significant step is a turning point for Karatay’s future. Mayor Hasan Kılca underlined the opportunities provided by the GCoM Agreement for Karatay, saying, ‘As Karatay Municipality, we have taken a big step to make our district more livable and sustainable. The GCoM Agreement enables us to be part of a global cooperation in the fight against climate change. Through the SECAP we will prepare, we will implement environmentally friendly projects that will reduce energy consumption, increase renewable energy sources, decrease carbon emissions, and improve the quality of life of our citizens. Our Solar Power Plants, GES-equipped Marketplaces, and many other eco-friendly investments we have brought to our district are examples of our efforts that serve this purpose. This agreement will also enable international sharing of knowledge and experience. By collaborating with other municipalities, we will be able to develop more effective and innovative solutions. We have swiftly started the SECAP preparations for Karatay to achieve its sustainable development goals. Our aim is to leave a greener, cleaner Karatay to our children and future generations’.
