On the eighth anniversary of the treacherous coup attempt on July 15th, Dr. Eray Güçlüer, who participated as a speaker at the conference held at Altınbaş University, stated that the plans to divide Turkey started in 1961, saying, ‘If FETÖ doesn’t end, neither will PKK nor ISIS because all three are interconnected. Therefore, the fight should continue until it is completely over.’

On the 8th anniversary of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day, Altınbaş University hosted a special conference and also planted saplings in the ‘July 15 Democracy and Martyrs Forest’ established within the university campus seven years ago in memory of the martyrs. Altınbaş University Rector Prof. Dr. Çağrı Erhan, academicians, and many staff members attended the tree planting ceremony, while a conference titled ’15 July ‘The Victory of the Nation’ was held at the 100th Year Conference Hall at the Gayrettepe Campus. Dean of the Faculty of Economics, Administrative and Social Sciences, Prof. Dr. Tolga Demiryol, accompanied the conference as the moderator, with speakers including Dr. Eray Güçlüer, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ufuk Adak, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kenan Özkan.

The conference, which discussed the treacherous coup attempt on July 15, 2016, and the developments in Turkey in the aftermath, also evaluated where Turkey stands after 8 years. The speakers emphasized that July 15 was a turning point showing the Turkish nation’s commitment to democracy, unity, and solidarity to the whole world.

‘Plans date back 55 years’
Dr. Eray Güçlüer, in his speech where he mentioned that the events of July 15, 2016, were the result of a 55-year process, emphasized that for many years, infiltration had silently spread to every aspect of the state. He stated the following in his speech: ‘First of all, we need to look at the origins of this issue. I could trace it back to 55 years ago, to 1961. After the execution of the late Adnan Menderes in 1961, the constitution was amended, and new formations emerged beyond the sovereignty of the people. One of these was the Special Warfare Department. It was established in Turkey by the USA, but the state authorities were not informed. $10 million was spent annually on this. The CIA had deep plans for Turkey, and they tried to implement these plans starting from 1961. The plan to infiltrate Turkey, establish an alternative formation in Turkey, and take over the country started 55 years ago and continued.’

‘They had a vile and bloody plan in their hands, but they could not realize it’
Dr. Eray Güçlüer, who also talked about what would have happened in Turkey if they had succeeded on July 15, said, ‘In fact, this was not a coup attempt, it was a project to Syrianize, Iraqize, and dismember the Republic of Turkey. Their goal was to establish a statelet like the Vatican in Istanbul, separate it from Anatolia, and turn other regions into small, manageable provinces. They had a much more vile and bloody plan in their hands, but they could not achieve it. That night, on July 15, the FETÖ-affiliated generals at the border withdrew the soldiers from the Syria and Iraq borders. They emptied the borders because ISIS militants gathered in Iraq were going to enter Turkey with helicopters affiliated with the USA. PKK was going to enter Turkey under the pretext of fighting ISIS, and PKK was going to be glorified. They couldn’t do this, but a civil war would have erupted in many parts of Turkey. That vile person in the USA would have been brought to Turkey and a Vatican would have been established in Istanbul, and Turkey would have been divided into 22 provinces. In this way, a system would have been established where Turkey was constantly dependent on the West and America, and there was no Republic of Turkey. Our country would not exist, and this is what they wanted. But it didn’t happen; a strong will was put forth, especially by our President. In this case, they truly did not take into account the socio-genetic codes of the Turkish people.’

‘FETÖ must end for PKK and ISIS to end’
Finally, Dr. Güçlüer emphasized that the fight against FETÖ is the same as the fight against PKK and ISIS and should continue until only one person remains, stating, ‘Yes, the fight against FETÖ may not be at the desired level yet, but for 55 years, they patiently, quietly educated, equipped, provided intelligence, and financed at the highest level. They infiltrated various parts of the state, and if it were really another country, it would not have been easy to defeat this disaster. But we, as a nation, managed to defeat this disaster. After seeing the plan these vile people wanted to implement, the fight must continue without slowing down until it is completely over. Permanent units related to the issue should be established. It is not easy, but without FETÖ ending, neither PKK nor ISIS will end. In other words, if FETÖ does not end, none of them will end. The three are interconnected,’ concluding his words.

‘It is wrong to call July 15 a coup or coup attempt, there are different factors from other coups’
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ufuk Adak stated in his speech that it is necessary to distinguish between the coups in Turkish history and July 15, emphasizing that the most important feature of July 15 was that it was stopped by the will of the people. Dr. Adak continued his speech as follows: ‘It would actually be wrong to call July 15 a coup or coup attempt. Because there are many different factors from other coups. Firstly, FETÖ is, above all, an international organization and worked with these international intelligence organizations for many years. As a result of an incident in the digital age, we saw how the people were misled through these organizations. Another important difference is that this coup was stopped by the will of the people. Thousands of citizens took to the streets within 12 hours. There are always similarities drawn with the coups in history, but we must position July 15 in a different place. We were also very successful in the processes after the coup. There were many detentions and arrests in a very short time. Thousands of people were imprisoned. It was very administratively difficult for state institutions to cope with this situation. In conclusion, when evaluating July 15, we must consider it from many different perspectives. Moreover, the fight should continue until we completely get rid of these elements; academic studies and research should also be continued in the same way.’

‘The will of the people is based on our socio-genetic codes’
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kenan Özkan, stating that the will of the people emerged through socio-genetic codes on July 15, expressed that in the mass psychology formed as a result of past experiences, the feelings of homeland, nation, and independence are extremely high and important for Turks. Dr. Kenan Özkan said, ‘Especially in important situations like July 15, these concepts come to life in our society. People have always embraced these expressions as if they were their own honor. The concept of homeland in Turkish political history was introduced by Namık Kemal. Homeland equals honor because the homeland is likened to a mother or young girls, which is a concept already present in our national values. That’s why on the night of July 15, from Sarachane Square to Hakkari and Kars, people in all corners of the country protected their homeland and land. These behaviors are in our DNA. Furthermore, we must truly analyze, define, analyze, and evaluate July 15 with a very different perspective. Otherwise, we can make many mistakes. Being able to fight a structure and mentality that has been going on for many years is only possible by embracing deep traditions. It is necessary for the Turkish people, citizens, and youth to look at events with this awareness and act accordingly. Ultimately, the foresight of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey, emerges here: ‘O people, know this well, the Republic of Turkey cannot be the homeland, the dervishes, the disciples, the members. The most correct and real sect is the civilization sect.’ The lessons we should take from July 15 are strong intelligence, good technology. There is also a philosophical and intellectual dimension to the matter, which is to hold on tight to reason and science, the legacy left to us by Mustafa Kemal, and to know the value and significance of a secular, democratic, modern republic,’ he concluded.
