Residents living in a housing complex in Eyüpsultan, Istanbul, expressed their reaction to the prolonged power outage without any explanation. The residents of the complex demanded the resolution of the problem and the fixing of the malfunction.
Eyüpsultan Akşemsettin Mahallesi Yaylım Sokak, Öğretmenler Sitesi residents reacted to the ongoing power outage in the complex. Allegedly, the electricity connection was cut off due to the work around another building in the lower block of the complex since around 11.00 yesterday noon.
The site manager Yaşar Sakarya stated, ‘This is Akşemsettin Mahallesi Yaylım Sokak, number 12. I am the manager of the building. Our electricity was cut around 11.00 today. We do not know why. When we call 186, they say that it will be restored. We have been waiting until this hour. Ultimately, when we call the institution, they say the process is ongoing and later the electricity will be provided. At the moment, we do not see anything like that. We are victims. Those buildings are related to urban transformation, but we did not receive any notification. We are victims as a building now. There are 5 blocks here, all of them have no electricity. We want the responsible institution for our victimization to resolve it. There are sick people at home, people who keep their medicine in the fridge. Everyone is a victim now. When we call, they give an estimated time around 01.30. Maybe if we call a bit later, they will say 02.00. I do not think that our victimization will be resolved and our electricity will be restored.’
Another resident of the complex, Sedat Yamani, said, ‘They say it will be fixed at this time. We wait, that time comes. When it is not fixed, we call again. We ask where the malfunction is. They cannot say that for sure. The last information we received is that the underground cables are faulty. When will it be fixed for sure, which day will it be fixed because there are things in our fridge that will spoil. We are quite victims.’
Neşe Yaman, another resident, said, ‘We have been victims for 13 hours from 11.00 in the morning until this hour. We charge our phones from the grocery stores on the opposite street. Do you realize how primitive this situation is? The food in the fridge has started to warm up. There are sick people, people dependent on dialysis. 13 hours is not a joke. This is not the outskirts of Istanbul, it’s not a remote mountain. They keep calling, okay, saying one hour later, just like pacifying a child. There is no such thing. I’m shocked, I cannot express myself. I am really complaining.’
It was observed that the ends of the electrical cables being worked on along the street were left taped. The residents of the complex demanded that their grievances be addressed as soon as possible.
