The language club ‘Hello Mersin’, which was recently initiated by Mersin Metropolitan Municipality and received great interest, continues to provide education in English and German languages throughout the summer vacation. The ‘Hello Mersin’ language club of the Metropolitan Municipality provides free services to students in the essential area of foreign language, which is one of the basic requirements of today. Ensuring that children and young people have a productive holiday and do not forget what they have learned throughout the summer vacation, the club makes learning a foreign language enjoyable with its interactive and fun environment. Since its opening, the club, which has received great interest, offers an efficient learning process to those who want to learn a language with activities such as drama, games, and group work during the summer vacation. While German language education is provided only for adults on Tuesdays at 18.00, English education is provided for middle school, high school, and adults on weekdays from 09.00-11.00, 13.30-15.30, 16.00-17.30, and 18.00-19.30. Despite receiving education at school, students who find ‘Hello Mersin’ more fun and educational come to the course eagerly even during the summer vacation. English Teacher Rezzan Öztekin, who stated that they provide services as an English and German speaking club during the summer season, said, ‘The German speaking club is only available for adults. We also have English education for middle school, high school, and adult groups. We have 20 groups and each class consists of 25 people. The demands continue intensively.’ Emphasizing that students love the club, Öztekin said, ‘When they first come, they carry a bias that it will be a lesson. However, after seeing that we include English in their daily conversation routines, they get rid of this bias and participate in a fun way.’ Öztekin also pointed out that the fact that ‘Hello Mersin’ language club provides free services makes students and parents very happy, stating, ‘Especially because course fees for such courses are expensive, they thank our municipality very much for such a service.’ Talking about the content of the education, Öztekin said, ‘There are 7 teachers working in the speaking club. We have board games. Besides that, we organize various games every day. We plan conversation cards and game groups. This way, we teach the foreign language by making it fun.’ 13-year-old Öykü Kara, who continues her English lessons at Hello Mersin club and stated that she likes the club very much, said, ‘Our lessons at Hello Mersin are fun. Our teachers help us when we get stuck. We play games and have different activities. We can’t learn much in English lessons at school. When I heard about this place, I wanted to come, and now that I’m here, I don’t want to leave. We learn while having fun here.’
