DÜZCE (İHA) – The harvesting of the geographical indication registered Düzce Chestnut Honey has begun to be carried out by beekeepers from Düzce. Düzce beekeepers have started to harvest Chestnut Honey, which they produce with great effort and which has a geographical indication registration. Chestnut honey not only stands out with its taste but also with its health benefits. During the harvesting process of this special honey, full combs are taken out of the hive while leaving enough honey for the bees to survive the winter. After the harvesting, the honey is packaged and prepared to be served on tables. Düzce Chestnut Honey is a monofloral honey obtained from the flowers of chestnut trees grown in our region. It is estimated that 10 kilograms of chestnut honey is produced per hive in Düzce, and this amount can increase up to 20 kilograms per hive with migratory beekeeping to other florals. Agriculture and Forestry Director Esra Uzun inspected the chestnut honey harvesting process at the apiary owned by leading beekeeper Mücahit Kılıç. She exchanged information with beekeepers about the chestnut honey harvesting techniques, season conditions, and ways to increase productivity. In her statement, Esra Uzun said, ‘Geographical indication registered chestnut honey production is carried out by many beekeepers in our province. Our beekeepers are having a very good season. The season has been very good, especially in our region, there has been very little rainfall over a period of one month, and the nectar flow has been very good. Therefore, our beekeepers have had a productive season. We are in cooperation with our beekeepers to ensure the availability of healthy and quality honey on our tables.’ Emphasizing that the texture and aroma of chestnut honey are extremely good, Uzun mentioned that Düzce chestnut honey is a sought-after honey, and with the initiative of the Provincial Directorate, it has obtained a Geographical Indication and branding has been completed, and necessary efforts and support will continue to be provided to advance the industry further, and wished the beekeepers a prosperous and fruitful season.
