Thanks to the efforts and work of stakeholder institutions in Bingöl, geographically indicated honey received a Geographical Indication Registration Certificate from the European Union, certifying its quality. Bingöl Honey became Turkey’s 23rd product and the first product in the honey sector to achieve this. Under the coordination of Bingöl Governorate, Bingöl University, Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, and Bingöl Beekeepers Union, Bingöl honey obtained geographical indication registration from the European Union. Bingöl Honey became the country’s 23rd product and the first product in the honey sector to showcase its quality.
Bingöl Honey, registered as a geographical product by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, was taken to Europe under the ‘International Geographical Indication Initiative.’ After the application was approved by the EU Commission, Bingöl Honey was announced in the Official Journal of the EU on March 12, 2024. Following a three-month period, Bingöl Honey was officially registered by the EU on July 10, 2024.
Bingöl Governor Ahmet Hamdi Usta stated that Bingöl honey is leading in the honey sector, and emphasized that its value will further increase. Governor Usta mentioned the economic benefits of introducing geographical indication products to the economy and how it creates a significant source of income for farmers. He expressed his gratitude to Bingöl University, the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, and the beekeepers for their contributions to the registration of Bingöl honey. He congratulated Bingöl for this achievement.
President of the Bingöl Beekeepers Union, Ali Aba, expressed his joy and pride as Bingöl’s honey producers for successfully completing the European geographical indication process. He thanked everyone involved and expressed hopes for expanded export opportunities. A citizen, Fırat Yıldız, expressed happiness over Bingöl Honey receiving the geographical indication registration after winning numerous awards in Europe. He mentioned his long-standing familiarity with the taste and quality of Bingöl Honey and how the registration brought joy to the locals.
