MediaMarkt, one of Europe’s leading electronics retailers, continues to encourage its employees with projects that develop them in the social and cultural fields and pioneer in its field. Established in 2022, MediaMarkt Sailing Team expands its athlete roster day by day with periodic trainings. MediaMarkt Turkey, the only sailing team among other MediaMarkt countries, has increased its current team members to 19 with training sessions opened during the winter season. With the voluntary efforts and participation of company employees, the sailing team, which continues its journey without slowing down, has already received registrations from 38 company employees for the upcoming new training series.
Preparing for its 66th race, the team has won awards and rankings in many races so far. Some of these achievements are as follows:
– Second Place in the Cabotage and Maritime Day Yacht Race (2024)
– Second Place in the Turkey Offshore Racing Club 2nd Leg Yacht Races (2024)
– Third Place in the Bahçeşehir University 3rd Leg Yacht Races (2024)
– Second Place in the Marmara Sailing Club Brotherhood Cup Bosphorus Race (2024)
– First Place in the 4th Presidential International Yacht Race (2023)
– Third Place in the 8th Sea Girl International Women’s Sailing Cup (2023)
The company, continuing its efforts to strengthen its sustainability vision, has covered a total of 257 nautical miles in the races it participated with the sailing team since the beginning of the 2024 season. The team spent 44 hours at sea in 2024 by racing solely with the power of the wind. If the same distance were covered with a diesel engine, which is mandatory on the boat, instead of wind power, it would have caused an emission of 577 kilograms.
How was it calculated?
According to the given information, approximately 2.68 kilograms of carbon emissions are caused by 1 liter of diesel fuel. If a 22-horsepower diesel engine had been used instead of wind power to cover 257 nautical miles, approximately 215 liters of diesel fuel would have been consumed. 215 liters of diesel fuel results in approximately 577 kilograms of carbon emissions. Thus, by using only wind power, 577 kilograms of carbon emissions were prevented.
