As the Konya Plain, known as the granary of Turkey, leaves behind a dry season, a decrease in the wheat harvest compared to the previous year is expected. Covering 67% of the total area as agricultural land, Konya has a production area of 2.2 million hectares. The lack of snowfall during the past winter season led to a decrease in the harvest. In the region where the expected yield was not met, barley harvest has ended while wheat harvest has been 80% completed. ZMO Konya Branch President Burak Kırkgöz stated that there has been a loss in yield compared to previous periods during the wheat harvest season due to frost and cold weather affecting the wheat grains. He mentioned that the wheat harvest is expected to be around 2 million tons in Konya, which is a 5% increase compared to the previous year. However, adverse weather conditions such as frost and cold during the flowering period resulted in significant yield losses. Kırkgöz also advised farmers to avoid early planting and recommended following weather forecasts for irrigation. He emphasized the importance of increasing support for farmers to cope with high input costs. He expressed hope for a year with abundant rainfall and snow, which is crucial for crops like cereals in the region.
