The moments when Kemal Başer, known as ‘Snake Catcher Kemal’ in Hatay, advised the snake he released back into nature to ‘stay away from humans’ brought a smile to people’s faces. With the arrival of summer and the extreme heat, underground creatures started to come to the surface. Especially snakes among the underground creatures began to be seen in nature, on roads, in gardens, and houses. Kemal Başer, who lives in the Payas district of Hatay and works in pest control, is known for catching snakes that enter people’s living spaces. Moments when Başer, known in the region as ‘Snake Catcher Kemal’, provided information about a black snake he caught and released it back into nature were captured on a mobile phone camera. The moment when Snake Catcher Kemal released the black snake back into nature and said, ‘Black snake, you are not harmful, but humans are more dangerous than you,’ brought a smile. The black snake, released into nature, disappeared from sight shortly after being released.
“I’m trying to help people, when a snake enters their homes, I go and catch it.” Kemal Başer, who amuses with the advice he gives to snakes, said, “Due to my work, I am constantly in the field, whether it be pests, venomous insects, or reptiles, I am constantly in close contact with them, so I have knowledge in this regard. I’m trying to help people, when a snake enters their homes, I go and catch it. I deal with snakes here, it’s a hobby and interest of mine. I love nature, animals, all of them. There is prejudice against snakes, people kill every snake they see. I am also fighting in my own way for these snakes not to be killed, trying to introduce the snakes to people. I introduce non-venomous snakes as non-venomous to people, and at least I try to prevent them from being killed. Now, because I catch these snakes, people started calling me ‘Snake Catcher Kemal’ in the public.
“When we see a snake, Snake Catcher Kemal immediately comes to mind and we call him.” Burak Gökoğlu, who lives in the Payas district, said, “He is very knowledgeable about snakes. When we see snakes entering houses or standing by the roadside in Payas, we immediately think of Snake Catcher Kemal and call him. In other words, he makes us like snakes, explains that they are not poisonous, and releases them back into nature.”
