The Purple Scissors Sewing Course, implemented by the Women’s Studies Department of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality in collaboration with the Vocational Factory, has started. Women who have taken scissors and measuring tapes in their hands are learning pattern making and getting ready to sit at the sewing machine.
Women in Izmir have taken action to gain a new skill and achieve economic independence. The Purple Scissors Sewing Course initiated by Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Women’s Studies Department and Vocational Factory is held at the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Key Women’s Comprehensive Service Center in Ornekkoy on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays between 09:30-14:30. In this course where basic sewing knowledge is shared, women both learn and enjoy their time, aiming to sew their own clothes and sell the clothes they produce.
Women-focused activities
Providing information about the course, the Responsible of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Key Women’s Comprehensive Service Center, Dilek Aksoy, said, “We are organizing our course for the third time. So far, we have reached 270 women. This period, 25 women participants will receive 140 hours of training over 8 weeks. As the Women’s Studies Department, we carry out women-focused activities. Women who attend the course entrust their children to our nursery located downstairs. We organize our services according to the needs of women.”
Certified course
Aksoy emphasized that women greatly enjoy the course, saying, “Women love sewing. Our registrations were filled in three days. Women who attend the course start sewing clothes for themselves and their children. There are also those who attend to earn income. Since our course is certified, participating women can also start working in textile workshops.”
“Women are very enthusiastic”
Clothing Teacher Serpil Çetin stated, “I have been doing this job for 42 years, and I continue to teach with the same enthusiasm as the first day for 42 years. Here, we provide our students with basic information on garment production. Our environment is very nice. Women are very enthusiastic. They work very eagerly.”
“I chose Psychology but my heart stayed in fashion”
The youngest member of the course, 18-year-old Duygu Doğan, stated, “I was torn between psychology and fashion design departments in university preferences. I chose the psychology department, but my heart also stayed in fashion. I joined this course because I couldn’t learn on my own with the sewing machine at home. In the future, I would like to advance in both psychology and fashion in terms of career. I want to learn pattern making and sewing here, and I aim to sell the products I produce.”
“I got emotional, I think I will be a tailor”
58-year-old participant Gönül Erbeken, who said she had no knowledge of sewing, expressed her feelings by saying, “I really wanted to attend such a course. I wanted to help my husband economically and distract myself. This place was a great opportunity for me. Our teacher explains the lessons very nicely. God willing, I want to produce something and earn money. Sewing seems very enjoyable. For now, even if I only hem trousers or shorten a dress, it’s enough. A few pennies will come into my pocket. When I imagine these, I am happy. I think I will be a tailor.”
“I am very pleased”
60-year-old participant Mukaddes Karasu, who has knowledge of sewing but joined the course to further improve herself, said, “When I moved from Istanbul to Izmir, I was in search. When I saw the announcement of the Purple Scissors Sewing Course, I enrolled. I am very pleased with the course. I love sewing, but I want to enhance my knowledge a bit more. I am very pleased with our teacher and the facilities here. After we finish our work, we hold hands with friends and dance, have fun.”
