Experts stated that watermelon, which abundantly grows in regions with a Mediterranean climate, among the hottest regions in Turkey, not only cools down the consumers during summer heat but also helps maintain the body’s electrolyte balance. Karya Farma HBX R&D, continuing its scientific research at ADU Technopark, recommended consuming watermelon to avoid the negative effects of desert heat after conducting a study on the benefits of watermelon, which consists of 92% water content.

Hakan Başlık, the Coordinator of Karya Farma HBX R&D (BAP) Scientific Research Projects Center, who has been conducting research on natural agricultural products, especially endemic plants, for about 20 years, stated, ‘According to the research results, whatever grows intensively in a region is very important for human health. Due to the summer season, we conducted a study on watermelon. We found out that watermelon, which many people consume with pleasure both for its taste and cooling properties, also helps maintain the body’s electrolyte balance.’ He recommended everyone to consume plenty of watermelon throughout the summer season as long as it is not prohibited by doctors.

Başlık emphasized that the benefits of watermelon are numerous, stating that its components are beneficial in alleviating many health issues. ‘Watermelon contains powerful antioxidants like lycopene, beta-carotene, and vitamin C. These components protect the body from cellular damage caused by free radicals and can reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as cancer and heart diseases. Watermelon consists of 92% water, making it an excellent source of hydration. Especially in hot summer months, it is ideal for meeting the body’s water needs. Additionally, watermelon contains electrolytes like potassium, which helps regulate the fluid balance in the body. An amino acid called citrulline in watermelon has anti-inflammatory properties and can alleviate muscle pain. Watermelon juice, popular among athletes, can accelerate muscle recovery after exercise. Its high water content and richness in electrolytes make it effective in maintaining water and electrolyte balance. Especially potassium is important for heart health and muscle functions. These properties of watermelon make it an ideal fruit to balance the body in hot weather and after intense physical activities.’
