Seedless watermelons grown on approximately 10,500 hectares in Adana not only adorn the tables of European countries but also contribute to the country’s economy. Harvesting continues in Adana, where Turkey’s earliest watermelons are harvested. This year, seedless watermelons planted on about 10,500 hectares are being harvested and exported to European, Balkan, and Scandinavian countries in special crates. The expected yield of 55,000 tons of watermelon this year is sold at a price of 10-11 Turkish Liras per kilogram. ‘There is a high demand’ During the harvest, Yüreğir Chamber of Agriculture President Mehmet Akın Doğan stated to Ihlas News Agency that the demand for seedless watermelons has been increasing day by day for the past 3 years. He mentioned, ‘The inside of the watermelon is completely red and seedless. Due to its small size, it is consumed quickly when it enters homes. Europe loves this watermelon. Although this watermelon is also produced in Europe, there is a higher demand for the watermelon produced in our country due to its lower cost. A large portion of the watermelon is exported abroad.’ ‘Interest in seedless watermelons is increasing day by day’ Watermelon producer Ömer Pamuk mentioned that Europe highly appreciates seedless watermelons and stated, ‘We are very pleased with the interest this year due to the European Championships. We are in a busy period of work. The taste of the watermelon is very good. Currently, the price of watermelon per kilogram is 10-11 Turkish Liras. The hosting of ‘EURO 2024′ in Germany has increased our orders. Generally, Europe consumes seedless watermelons. The promotion of this watermelon has been done in our country as well, and interest in seedless watermelons is increasing day by day.’
