The event commemorating the incident in which 37 people lost their lives as a result of the burning of Madımak Hotel in Sivas on July 2, 1993, was remembered with an event held in Söke.

The commemoration event took place in Hükümet Meydanı. Söke Mayor Dr. Mustafa İberya Arıkan, Deputy Mayors Yağız Pullukçu and Ahmet Evin, CHP Söke District President Muammer Akmazlar, and representatives of various civil society organizations attended the event. Speeches were made at the commemoration ceremony, remembering those who lost their lives in the Madımak incident, and emphasizing peace, tolerance, and human rights.

In his speech, Söke Mayor Dr. Mustafa İberya Arıkan stated, “The Sivas Madımak massacre, unfortunately, has been engraved in our memories as one of the most painful and darkest incidents in our recent history. We gathered here to remember the lives we lost, our intellectuals. We have never forgotten the pain that occurred 31 years ago. On July 2, 1993, a shameful incident took place in Sivas; 37 valuable individuals were subjected to an attack and lost their lives due to their beliefs and thoughts. This painful incident once again showed us the consequences of intolerance, discrimination, and hatred. We believe that our differences should enrich us instead of dividing us. Today, while commemorating this tragedy, we also pledge once again for social peace, love, and tolerance. We remember with mercy the souls who lost their lives at Madımak Hotel and emphasize our determination to walk towards a bright future in unity and solidarity, hoping that such pains will not be experienced again.” Local artists Fırat Mert, Ulaş Doğan, and Can Aksoy sang folk songs in memory of the 37 people after the speeches.
