CHP leader Özgür Özel, who attended the commemoration program of the 31st anniversary of the Madımak events, called for the building where the incident took place to be transformed into a Museum of Shame and for those responsible to be prosecuted for crimes against humanity. CHP leader Özgür Özel and senior party officials attended the commemoration program of the 31st anniversary of the Madımak events in Sivas. Özel, who went to the building where the incident took place, which now serves as the Science Culture and Arts Center, left carnations next to the photos of the deceased in front of the building in memory of those who died in the incident. Speaking to the press, Özel called for the building to be transformed into a Museum of Shame and for the events to be recognized as crimes against humanity.Özgür Özel’s call for a Museum of Shame and crimes against humanityToday marks the 31st anniversary of the Madımak massacre. As the leader of the CHP, we came here with all our staff to be with the families. Without making two important decisions, this struggle will not stop without results. Of course, we will come here every year on July 2nd to commemorate. We consider the 31st year as the first year. The first demand of the families and us is for Madımak to become a Museum of Shame. When the families see the sign of Science and Culture Center, they are upset, saying ‘We did not deserve this.’ They say, ‘Do we have burning people in our culture, neither science nor culture, is it in our culture?’ They say, ‘You burned souls here who believe in science, culture, and art.’ Firstly, this place will be a Museum of Shame, and secondly, we continue to hope in the appeal process. Ultimately, these decisions need to be overturned and recognized as crimes against humanity. Crimes against humanity do not expire, they are not subject to amnesty. Therefore, we do not accept any decision until a decision is made on crimes against humanity. I expect the punishment of those who have committed crimes against humanity, including 7 German citizens, 2 Saudi citizens, one who died 500 meters away from the Sivas Police Directorate, one employed in the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality under the AK Party administration, and the overturning of all other decisions made, including the statute of limitations.”” I will personally inaugurate the Museum of Shame”In his statement, Özel expressed that the incident was not a blood feud but a struggle for life, and said he would personally inaugurate the Museum of Shame. In his statement, Özel said the following: “We are very determined. This is not a blood feud. Blood feuds end one day. This is a struggle for life. It is a crime against humanity committed against our lives. It is a crime against humanity that threatens all lives in Turkey, it is a hate crime. It is a mine laid in the peace of Turkey, it is dynamite. Only tearful mothers, children, siblings, or lawyers following the case cannot clean these mines and dynamites. We, as politicians, will see all the risks and courageously clean them. Blood feuds end but this struggle for life does not end. Will it be a year, two years, three years, but I swear that in the upcoming July 2nds, I will personally inaugurate the Museum of Shame in Madımak, we will do it together. I swear, I swear, I swear.”
