Karatay Mayor Hasan Kılca, expressing that they preserve the Seljuk architecture and history, stated that the 800-year-old caravanserai will increase the city’s allure.
With many projects carried out by the Karatay Municipality, the district protects its centuries-old history, culture, and historical texture. In this context, the Obruk Caravanserai Museum Hotel, where restoration and landscaping works have been completed in Obruk Neighborhood, will be opened on Friday, June 28th.
Revival of the Seljuk Caravanserai
Located next to the 180-meter width and 145-meter depth Kızören Sinkhole at the 70th kilometer of the Konya-Aksaray Highway, the Seljuk caravanserai built 800 years ago was transformed into a 13-room hotel after 4 years of restoration work. Each room of the caravanserai, equipped with historical materials such as kitchen utensils, tables, and chairs, has a heated Turkish bath built into the floor.
‘Obruk Caravanserai Museum Hotel’ to become a brand
Stating that they preserve the Seljuk architecture and history, Karatay Mayor Hasan Kılca remarked that the caravanserai will be one of the city’s brand values. Providing information that the Obruk Caravanserai Museum Hotel is one of the oldest hotels in the world, Hasan Kılca expressed, ‘At the heart of our desire to revive the beauties carried in Karatay lies our sense of gratitude towards our ancestors who built a civilization along with these structures. We are delighted to revive the centuries-old history with this sentiment. Obruk Inn was used as accommodation until the early 1900s. It was then demolished. We completed its restoration in four years. It was important for this to be passed on to future generations. We designed it as a museum and hotel. We used materials with a history of 200-300 years inside the hotel. A guest staying here will feel as if they are staying in the 1200s. There is also a museum and library in the open courtyard of the caravanserai. Our visitors will have the opportunity to examine the exhibited works here. We built heated Turkish baths on the floors of the rooms. Obruk Caravanserai Museum Hotel combines modernity and history. Our guests will love it here. We predict that the caravanserai will be one of the important tourism destinations. We will present the caravanserai, which we have restored to its magnificent appearance after centuries, to our citizens on Friday, June 28th. I wish the best for Konya and Karatay in advance.’
