The mound view in the town of Keban in Elazığ attracts attention, while villagers are demanding that excavation work be initiated to promote the area for tourism. The mound located in Dürümlü village, which is affiliated with the Keban district, stands out with its location and view. It is estimated that the mound, which is located right next to the Keban Dam Lake and has a dominant position in the region, dates back to the Urartian and Roman periods. Approximately 10 years ago, the mound was declared a protected area and is being guarded by the gendarmerie, yet it has become a target for illegal excavations. According to rumors, it is said that the tomb of an Urartian king is located in the area, and the villagers are demanding excavation work to be carried out in order to promote the area for tourism.
Destroyed by illegal excavations, Nedim Kılınç, one of the village residents providing information about the mound, stated, ‘It is located in Dürümlü village, affiliated with Keban district. We are born and raised in this village. This mound is a place dating back to the Urartians or Romans. It is located on the border of the Keban Dam. The view is beautiful. We do not know exactly what is inside, but citizens conducting illegal excavations come here and destroy the area. Apart from that, we do not have much information about this place. This has been a protected area for about 10 years. Our law enforcement constantly patrols here, but despite their efforts, illegal excavations occur. No excavation work has been initiated here so far. We also want excavation work to be initiated here. It is a historical place, let the citizens come and see it and promote it for tourism. According to rumors, they say that there is the tomb of an Urartian king here. Citizens believe in these rumors and come here to conduct illegal excavations. As villagers, we are tired of those conducting illegal excavations here. Because too many people come, one inevitably gets disturbed. It is not clear who these people are.’
