Hybrid watermelon seeds subsidized by 50% were turned into seedlings and planted in the soil to increase production of Kandıra watermelon and expand its market nationwide.
Within the scope of the ‘Alternative Product Cultivation Support Project’ by Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality, farmers were provided with 50% subsidized certified hybrid watermelon seeds. Beneficiary producers turned these seeds into seedlings and planted them in their fields. The Metropolitan Municipality continues to increase and sustain support to farmers to ensure uninterrupted agricultural production in rural areas throughout the city and to improve farmers’ income levels. Always standing by the farmers, the Metropolitan Municipality directs idle lands towards agriculture, high-value alternative products, and new production techniques. In this context, by providing 50% subsidized watermelon seeds to farmers, the Metropolitan Municipality aims to increase the production of the famous Kandıra watermelon and bring idle lands into agricultural use. Previously, the Metropolitan Municipality supported 650 acres of watermelon fields in Kocaeli with 50% subsidized watermelon seeds. As a result of these supports, idle lands were brought into agricultural use, leading to significant increases in watermelon production.
Kandıra Watermelon
Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality continues its efforts to increase the production of Kandıra watermelon, known for its unique taste and aroma, and to have a broad market nationwide. The fame of Kandıra watermelon, which leans towards pink rather than red in color, with its rich aroma and juicy texture, extends beyond the borders of the province. Considered a summer essential and sought after by consumers, Kandıra watermelon is very rich in vitamin C. It is an important source of nutrients that strengthen the immune system, regulate blood pressure, and protect the skin from the harmful effects of the sun.
