Listed each expert one by one, these features reveal that it is a purebred
Prof. Dr. Nazlı Ercan, the Director of Sivas Cumhuriyet University Kangal Dog Application and Research Center, stated that they are conducting studies to protect the national value of Kangal dogs and to transfer this pure breed to the future. Ercan emphasized the importance of Kangal dogs in terms of their genetic heritage and underlined that they are working to ensure the continuity of this valuable breed for future generations.

Director of Sivas Cumhuriyet University Kangal Dog Application and Research Center, Prof. Dr. Nazlı Ercan, expressed that they are conducting studies to protect the national value of Kangal dogs and to pass on this pure breed to the future. Ercan touched upon the racial characteristics of Kangal dogs and the points to be aware of during the summer months.
“The head is large and round, eyes are in shades of brown”
Prof. Dr. Ercan, stating that Kangal dogs are recognized by their unique physical and behavioral characteristics, said, “Kangal dog is a large breed. When we look at their body structure, the head is large and round, eyes are in shades of brown. Legs are strong and paws are firmly grounded. Their tails are curled upwards. The chest circumference is deep and wide, which allows them to have a broad lung capacity and cover long distances with herds.”
Ercan stated that the coat structure of Kangal dogs consists of two layers, “The coat color can vary from light yellow to gray, dark brown brindle colors. There are black hairs referred to as a ‘mask’ by the public around the eyes, nose, and ears. The upper layer consists of longer, stiff, and oily hairs, which gives them a waterproof feature. The undercoat consists of finer and softer fur. This double-layered structure protects Kangal dogs against both harsh winter conditions and hot summer weather.”
“They create a cool area for themselves by digging the soil”
Prof. Dr. Ercan stated that Kangal dogs generally do not like the summer months and can be more restless during this period, saying, “Our Kangal dogs generally prefer cool areas such as under trees or cool places in their shelters during the summer. They even create cool areas by digging the soil in their kennels and stay in these areas.”
“Plenty of water should be provided”
Ercan warned Kangal dog owners that their shelters should be in areas protected from direct sunlight and there should always be clean and plenty of water in front of their nests, “Our Kangal dogs try to balance their body heat through respiration. Therefore, taking measures to help them cool down in the summer is very important. Their nutrition should also be taken into consideration because they are less active in the hot season and stay in sheltered areas.”
This center preserves pure breeds
Prof. Dr. Ercan stated that they conduct scientific research to protect Kangal dogs from genetic predispositions and diseases, “As a center, we aim to preserve this pure breed by conducting scientific research on the genetic characteristics of our national value Kangal dogs and diseases with genetic predispositions.”
