With the support of Bodrum Municipality, the diploma project of the Department of Landscape Architecture at Istanbul Technical University focused on the theme ‘Lower Elevations Revealing The Halikarnassos Hidden Landscapes’, exploring the archaeological landscape of Bodrum.

The project was led by Prof. Dr. Gülşen Aytaç and Prof. Dr. Elif Kutay Karaçor, with jury members including Prof. Dr. Zeynep Kuban Tokgöz, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Deniz Aslan, Instructor Dr. Nesli Naz Aksu, Architectural Photographer and Video Artist Emre Dörter, and assistants Araş. Gör. Lâl Dalay and Araş. Gör. Ezgi Beyen. The diploma project evaluation committee, with the participation of Istanbul Technical University graduate Senior Architect Melike Yapıcı on behalf of Bodrum Municipality, took place.

The graduation project, undertaken by students in the Spring Semester of 2023-24, focuses on revealing the visible/invisible layers and hidden nature of Halikarnassos, which holds unique historical, cultural, and architectural significance, and aims to integrate it into present-day Bodrum. The project delves into how the city’s archaeological past interacts with its natural topography and how the defense system was shaped. Students also investigated the city systems by examining the walls that shed light on the architectural style of the Caria Region and are one of the works of military engineering.

Through their graduation projects, students presented design solutions for Bodrum that respect its nature, history, and archaeology, with a balance between preservation and use, from a contemporary landscape architecture perspective.

In the context of landscape architecture and graduation projects, students aimed to promote Bodrum’s identity not only as a tourist destination but also as a space that respects historical heritage and combines modern development.

In the coming days, projects presented by Istanbul Technical University Landscape Architecture students will be exhibited as a gallery, hosted by Bodrum Municipality.
