The delegation from the Democracy and Progress Party (DEM Party) visited the Republican People’s Party (CHP) on the occasion of Eid al-Adha. On the second day of Eid al-Adha, the tradition of exchanging holiday greetings among political parties continues. In this context, the DEM Party delegation visited the CHP Headquarters on the occasion of the holiday. The delegation led by DEM Party Diyarbakır Deputy Sevilay Çelenk was welcomed by the delegation led by CHP Vice President Deniz Yücel. Speaking here, Çelenk expressed that the issue of trusteeship generally unsettles their party, stating, ‘We were worried whether we would experience the same wave again. If it hadn’t been for that, we would have entered the holiday with the feeling we caught after the elections, it would have been really nice. We believe that if we develop a resistance together with your support, we will overcome it.’
“If there are some allegations and evidence, no one is immune from investigation or prosecution” CHP Vice President Deniz Yücel expressed that no results can be achieved through these methods, stating, ‘There are examples from the past. You achieved that success again in certain cities in the March 31 Local Elections. If there are some allegations and evidence, no one is immune from investigation or prosecution. The legal process is separate, it progresses in its own course. Following the July 15 coup attempt, the appointment of trustees came as a result of a change in the municipal law. However, there are elected municipal council members there. Under normal circumstances, a deputy mayor was elected instead of removing it. Without a court decision, without a trial, they can do this just by opening an investigation, which is shameful for democracy.’
“In a region like that, it’s hard to find someone without an old file” In response to Yücel’s words, Çelenk claimed that the trustee issue is akin to a coup, stating, ‘After all, when we look at the ongoing file issue, even people like us who have spent 30 years of their lives in academia were tried in Heavy Penal Courts. In a region like that, it’s hard to find someone without an old file. After all, considering that all candidacies were approved by the Supreme Election Council (YSK), it actually doesn’t say anything. Municipal councils can do this from within. We all see that it was tried in Van, stepped back but not abandoned. I think it’s also a result of the cliquishness within them. I wish we were talking about something else on the holiday instead of this.’
“The normalization process disturbed some” Yücel, pointing out that after the March 31 elections, CHP Chairman Özgür Özel took positive steps towards the normalization of Turkey, stated, ‘Communication, dialogue, common sense, consultation, and consensus are indispensable in democracies. This disturbed some, and we all observe that.’
