Wild goat kids found exhausted in Çukurca district of Hakkari are being nurtured by local goat mothers in Van under protection. Nature Conservation National Parks (DKMP) 14th Regional Directorate received a report that there were 2 orphaned wild goat kids in Çayırlı village, connected to Çukurca district, without their mothers. Following the report, DKMP Hakkari Provincial Directorate personnel went to the area. DKMP teams, after searching the area for a long time and waiting in the field, delivered the 2 orphaned wild goat kids to Van YYU Wildlife Conservation and Rehabilitation Center for care and feeding since their mothers could not be reached. At the center, another goat was provided as a foster mother for the wild goat kids, and the treatment process was initiated. The treatment process of the kids is ongoing.
Expressing that their center is concerned with the issues of wildlife in the Van Lake Basin, Prof. Dr. Lokman Aslan, the Director of Van YYU Wildlife Conservation and Rehabilitation Center, stated, ‘Most recently, 2 orphaned mountain goat kids separated from their mother in Hakkari were brought to our center by DKMP Hakkari Provincial Directorate teams. After the initial care by a veterinarian in Hakkari, the kids were brought to our center. In our center, we accustom our kids to foster mothers instead of using bottles. In previous years, we have fed orphaned mountain goat kids with foster mothers and reintroduced them to nature. These kids, like other young ones, were separated from their mothers at a very young age. We will provide the necessary care, treatment, and rehabilitation to prepare them for nature and hand them over to DKMP 14th Regional Directorate personnel. The wildlife in the Van Lake Basin is very rich. Among them, mountain goats hold a significant portion. Due to the high population of mountain goats in the Van Lake Basin, we occasionally host the sick, injured, and orphaned ones in our center. After completing their care and rehabilitation, we release them back into their natural habitats.’
