55-year-old Galip Alaylı, who has been suffering from Parkinson’s disease for 10 years in the district of Adapazarı in Sakarya, found a solution to his health problems and significantly overcame his tremor issue through a brain pacemaker surgery at Eskişehir City Hospital. Galip Alaylı, who has been struggling with Parkinson’s disease for years, could not find a solution to his condition despite various medication treatments. After applying to Eskişehir City Hospital, he underwent a brain pacemaker surgery following the joint decision of brain surgery, neurology, and psychiatry specialists. Following the surgery, Alaylı significantly reduced his tremors, leaving behind the difficulties he faced in his daily life. The successful operation marked the first brain pacemaker surgery at Eskişehir City Hospital.
“I couldn’t take my hand to the glass, I couldn’t drink water” 55-year-old Galip Alaylı from Adapazarı said, “I have Parkinson’s disease and now they put a pacemaker on me. I feel very good now, I am fine. There was a tremor. I couldn’t take my hand to the glass, I couldn’t drink water. Now I can drink. Eating and drinking have become easier and they told me that it will improve further and I will benefit. God bless the doctors,” he said.
“Eskişehir City Hospital performed the first brain pacemaker procedure” Provincial Health Director Yaşar Bildirici stated, “The team that implanted the brain pacemaker for this Parkinson’s patient had prior experience in this hospital with procedures such as pain, epilepsy, and bladder pacemakers. They are an experienced team. Today, we performed the first brain pacemaker implant for our patient who came from Adapazarı. What does this mean for us and our patients? Eskişehir City Hospital performed the first brain pacemaker procedure. This means that from now on, brain pacemaker surgery can be performed at our hospital through the expertise of our doctors. Secondly, this type of surgery is not performed everywhere by everyone.
“We evaluated the patient and deemed suitable for pacemaker surgery” Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Onur Keskin, working in the neurology clinic, mentioned some details about the patient and said, “Our patient has been a Parkinson’s patient for over 10 years. He came to us from Adapazarı and had advanced Parkinson’s disease. Due to the tremors in his hands, he had difficulty in eating and performing daily tasks. In this regard, considering the advancement of the disease and his struggle with daily tasks, we evaluated the patient and deemed suitable for pacemaker surgery. This procedure is performed by a team consisting of psychiatry, brain surgery, and neurology specialists. After the pacemaker surgery, our patient benefited from reduced tremors. He started eating better. Of course, this is the initial condition of the patient. He is progressively getting better.
“We expect a significant improvement in patients’ complaints due to the flow of current to the brain at certain intervals” Specialist Physician Dr. Mehmet Beşir Sürme, working in brain surgery, stated, “After not benefiting from various medication treatments, a decision was made by a board for a brain pacemaker surgery. Our surgery is actually two-staged. The first stage is when we send an electrode to the patient while they are awake to test whether we will receive any effect or side effect. If we receive a good effect from the patient and they do not experience any side effects, we proceed to the second stage, which is the pacemaker implantation. We usually place the pacemaker just under 2 centimeters below the clavicle and we expect a significant improvement in patients’ complaints due to the flow of current to the brain at certain intervals.
