Young student from Tekirdağ becomes second in the European Chess Championship in Ireland, making Turkey proud.
Tekirdağ’s 7-year-old Kumsal İşlek, who lives in the Çerkezköy district and attends a special school as a kindergarten student, achieved second place by scoring the same points as the first-place athlete in the European Schools Chess Championship held in Ireland, with 191 athletes from 17 countries participating.
Having placed third in the 7-year-old girls category at the Turkish Youth Stars Chess Championship held in Antalya from January 20 to 27, 2024, Kumsal İşlek represented our country at the European Chess Championship held in Ireland from June 3 to 7.
Achieving second place in Europe
Kumsal İşlek, who brought great pride to her family and Tekirdağ with her success at a young age, was prepared for the tournament by her teacher Ceyda Aslan. School principal Tuğba Zenginal expressed great happiness and pride for Kumsal’s success, stating, ‘We congratulate our child who has brought us this pride at such a young age. Her singing of our National Anthem there is a separate pride for us, for our country.’

Principal Zenginal added, ‘Kumsal, who has been at our school for three years, crowned her graduation this year with the success she achieved, leaving us with an unforgettable memory. We wish all our children to achieve great successes like Kumsal.’

Senem İşlek and Burak İşlek, the parents of Kumsal İşlek, who became the third in the 7-year-old girls category at the Turkish Youth Stars Chess Championship held in Antalya from January 20 to 27, 2024, expressed their gratitude, ‘From May 30 to June 8, in Ireland, where the European Chess Championship took place with the participation of 191 athletes from 17 countries, our Kumsal became second in Europe by scoring the same points as the first.
