Women who gain handcraft skills in the field of confectionery by attending the Sewing Course at Yenişehir MERCEK, which provides services within Mersin Metropolitan Municipality, will delight their children with the clothes they sew during the holiday season. At the Sewing Course located in MERCEK Vocational Training Center, women learn sewing techniques and socialize. Women learn techniques in the field of confectionery, improve themselves, and sew clothes for themselves, their families, and the Clothing House of the Metropolitan Municipality. Some participants obtain a master instructor certificate and become professionals. The t-shirts, pajama sets, skirts, dresses, and many other products sewn by the participants are sent to the Clothing House and delivered free of charge to the children of families in need. Many items sewn shortly before the Eid al-Adha will delight children during the holiday season. Families can visit the Clothing House with their children and get holiday clothes for them free of charge. Over 2,000 clothing items have been sewn in sewing courses so far and delivered to children from the Clothing House.
“Let our children wear their clothes with excitement during the Eid al-Adha” Gül Kadem Maya, the Coordinator of MERCEK Vocational Training Centers, explained that they provide training in collaboration with 4 master instructors at MERCEK Vocational Training Centers, in partnership with Yenişehir Public Education Center and Karacaoğlan Public Education Center. She stated, “The clothes sewn at our branches reach our children at the Clothing House. In the last month, our participants prepared for Eid al-Adha and completed their sewing to deliver holiday clothes to children. They sewed many clothes such as pajamas, shorts, dresses, skirts, sets, and t-shirts for boys and girls aged 2-14.” Maya emphasized that the training provided aims to provide a profession, not just a hobby, and said, “Some of them will become master instructors. Some participants want to open their own workshops. They are now sewing at home as they see it as a profession. They bought their own sewing machines, overlock machines, and are earning money. This situation makes us very happy because we wanted especially women to acquire a profession. Eid al-Adha is approaching. Let our children be happy during Eid al-Adha, wear their clothes with excitement, celebrate their holidays; we sewed many clothes for this purpose. Seeing their joy will also make us very happy. From the 4 different courses we have opened so far, we have sewn over 2,000 clothes, mostly children’s clothing, and delivered them to the Clothing House.”
“Our municipality provides all the necessary materials” Helen Adanır, one of the instructors of the Sewing Course, stated that they teach clothing sewing techniques in different areas with many modules and that there is great demand for the course. She said, “We are continuing our preparations for the holiday. We have clothes ready. I came from Hatay and I am an earthquake victim. I thank Vahap Bey for the support he offers to women. We will send the clothes we prepared for the holiday to the Clothing House for children.”
“All women can find employment through this course” Fatma Çakıcı, one of the participants, stressed that she will acquire a profession thanks to the sewing course and highlighted the importance of such courses for women. She said, “I had documents before. I had to complete my hours to get my master instructor certificate. We got to know this place thanks to a neighbor. We wanted to take advantage of this opportunity. We have improved ourselves for about 3 months. I also applied for the master position. Maybe in the future, I can become a master instructor here. All women can find employment through this course. I address all of them; they should apply to MERCEK. The opportunities here are unmatched. Eid al-Adha is approaching, and the clothes we made will delight the children. Making children happy is the most beautiful feeling for us.”
